Sodo, or Wolaita Sodo, is a town and separate woreda in south-central Ethiopia. It is the administrative centre of the Wolaita Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR). In the early 1930s, it was described as the only locality in Wolaita district that deserved the status of “town”, as it had a Saturday market, a telephone line to the capital and a weekly mail courier. It was captured by Italian ground troops in 1937, and it was the site of the final surrender of 2 Italian generals with their divisions in 1941. By 1958 it was one of 27 places in Ethiopia ranked as a First-Class Township, and by 1968 a branch of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia was established in the town. The town was the host of a refugee camp for victims of the 1984 famine, and in 1999 it was the site of week-long protests and riots. Sodo’s population is just over 250000, making it the second-most populous city in the South Region after Awassa. The town possesses a well-moderated subtropical highland climate, with a pronounced pattern of wet summers and dry winters. Average temperatures go for from 13 degrees to 16 degrees Celsius.

Sodo is served by an airport, a 166-kilometre road connecting the town with Chida, effectively reducing the distance between the Regional Capital. The town’s amenities include digital and mobile telephone access, postal service, 24-hour electrical service, two banks and a hospital. The town is vaunted as a centre for major health and education institutions, with Sodo Christian Hospital hosting one of the 10 surgical training centres in Africa – it provides a full range of medical and surgical service, including Orthopaedic and General, Maternity and Paediatrics. The Wolaita Sodo University Teaching Hospital is located in the town as well, and it serves over 2 million people. Taking all of this into account, Sodo proves suitable for students considering further education in town, especially in the medical field.
