Walter Sisulu University (WSU) is a public university located in Mthatha, South Africa. Its establishment date back to July 2005, which was as a result of a merger between three universities; Border Technikon, Eastern Cape Technikon and the University of the Transkei.
The university was named after an icon of the South African liberation struggle and close friend to Nelson Mandela, the late Walter Max Ulyate Sisulu.

Walter Sisulu University (WSU) is a public university located in Mthatha, South Africa. Its establishment date back to July 2005, which was as a result of a merger between three universities; Border Technikon, Eastern Cape Technikon and the University of the Transkei.
The university was named after an icon of the South African liberation struggle and close friend to Nelson Mandela, the late Walter Max Ulyate Sisulu.

Walter Sisulu University has four campuses namely; Mthatha Campus, Buffalo City Campus (East London), Butterworth Campus and Komani Campus (Queenstown). The university counts over 30, 000 students. It holds firm to its core values which are Academic freedom, Quality, Access, Success, Transformation, People Development and Resource Consciousness.

In 2019, two students were rewarded the award of most innovative prototype for developing a prosthetics, which is to be made available at an affordable price to the poor community.
The University has graduated notable alumni like Terence Nombembe – Chartered Accountant, Nomgcobo Jiba – Advocate, and Nonkululeko Gobodo – Chartered Accountant.

Candidates applying for programmes into the university must have one of the following:

For Certificate Programmes
Senior Certificate: Subjects should have a rating of 3 or more in English and Mathematics, Accounting HG-E/SG-D.
Senior Certificate: Subject recommendation: English, Accountancy, Mathematics/Mathematics Literacy and another relevant subject.
NSC (Degree/Diploma/Higher Certificate): Minimum rating of 3 in 4 recognised subjects.    50 % in either Mathematics or Mathematics Literacy, 40% in Life Orientation, 50% in the four other vocational subjects.

For Diploma Programmes
Senior Certificate: English HG-E.
NSC (Degree/Diploma): Minimum rating of 3 (40-49%) for English as a home language or first additional language level.
Must meet NC(V) Level 4 statutory requirements.

For Bachelor Degree Programmes
National Senior Certificate (NSC) will be required with an achievement rating of 4 (50% or better) in four recognized NSC 20-credit subjects: English, Mathematics, Biology and Physical Science.
National Diploma and any recognized Diploma.

Mthatha is a traditional town located in the Eastern Cape. It was founded in 1879 under the name Umtata and was known as the capital of the Transkei. In 1994, after regulation changes, Mthatha became part of a municipality and is the largest town in the region.
The town is inhabited by the Xhosa people, with the main religion being Christianity and minority are the Hindus, Muslims and Jews. Over the year, the temperature varies from 5.5°C to 26°C.

The town is home to some main attraction site like the Nelson Mandela Museum which displays a variety of historic documents and photos of the former president Mandela. It as well houses the Hluleka Nature Reserve and the Collywobbles Vulture Colony.
