Vanderbijlpark is a town in the Gauteng province of South Africa. It is an industrial town located on the banks of the Vaal River. Along with Vereeniging and Sasolburg, it forms the Vaal Triangle, a major industrial region of South Africa. The town was formed out of the need to build a large steelwork and an accompanying industrial town after World War II saw increased demand across the country. The steelworks began operating in 1947 and the town was proclaimed in 1949, as part of the Iron and Steel Corporation (ISCOR). When ISCOR’s second steelworks was opened in 1952, the town attained municipal status. Situated on the Highveld of South Africa, Vanderbijlpark experiences warm summers and cool winters; average temperatures go from 12 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius. The total population of the city is over 95000, with Whites constituting much of that number at 54.4%, followed by Black Africans at 42.5%. Afrikaans is the most spoken language at 51%, followed by Sotho at 19.9%, English at 10.0% and Zulu at 4.9%. Other languages constitute 14.2% of the percentage. Over 60% of the town’s workforce is employed in factories, with the rest working in government, private businesses, shops or in the service sector. It is the major steel-producing centre of South Africa, with other important metal-processing industries producing castings and equipment for mines and power stations. The town has recently experienced negative economic growth, with the local council declaring bankruptcy in November 2019.

Vanderbijlpark was designed in a circular pattern, different from the typical grid design of towns. It counts several suburbs across its four residential blocks. Close to the town are the historic black townships of Boipatong, Bophelong, Sebokeng and Evaton, as well as the internationally known township of Sharpeville, site of the infamous massacre of black protestors by white police in 1960. The poignant Sharpeville Human Rights Precinct that celebrates those who gave their lives in the fight for freedom is well worth a visit. The shoreline of the town is lined with picnic and camping sites, marinas, pleasure resorts, holiday homes and beaches. The Vaal Mall and the River Square Shopping Centre are prime shopping locations, and the Vaal Meander provides variety in regard to arts and craft shops, country stalls, antiques and collectables, brewery tours and outdoor adventure centres. The Emerald Resort and Casino offers diverse entertainment, and the resort’s Animal World and Aquadrome offer various services to guests. The Emfuleni Nature Park has great hiking trails and a Golf Estate in the vicinity. The town is home to campuses of higher institutions like Vaal University of Technology and North-West University, as well as several other primary and secondary schools. Vanderbijlpark can, therefore, be considered a suitable venue for education.
