The University of Yaoundé II also known in French as “Université de Yaoundé II” (UY2) is a public university located in Soa, Yaoundé, Cameroon. Following Cameroon’s independence in 1960, one of the crucial problems faced by country was the need for trained national cadres to handle senior positions in the civil service. Before independence, most Cameroonians pursued university education abroad. But the education they received overseas was poorly adapted to the needs of Africa in general, and of Cameroon in particular. So to provide higher education suitable for the specific needs and realities of the newly independent nation, the then government created a university complex known as the National Institute of University Studies (Institut National d’Etudes Universitaires) in 1961. Then in 1962, the National Institute of University Studies evolved into the ‘Federal University of Cameroon’ and was later on renamed to the University of Yaoundé.
In January 1993, the then government of Cameroon launched a major reform of its higher education system, leading to the creation of six universities from the sole University of Yaoundé. Hence, the University of Yaoundé was split into two separate entitie; the University of Yaoundé I and the University of Yaoundé II.
UY2 operates on five different campuses namely; the Soa campus (main campus), the Ebolowa campus, the Bertoua campus, the Ngoa-Ekelle campus (ESSTIC & IFORD) and the Obili campus (IRIC).

The University of Yaoundé II is regarded as one of the oldest universities in Cameroon. During the 7th edition of Universities Festivals of Arts and Culture (UNIFAC), the University of Yaoundé II emerged 3rd overall among the 10 institutions in competition. In 2017, the University of Yaoundé II bagged 11 gold medals and held the 3rd place in the 2017 edition of the All Varsity Games. UY2 is slated to host the 22nd edition of the All Varsity Games to take place in 2020. In 2017, the university’s collaboration and partnership with the China led to the inauguration of the Confucius Institute building within the UY2 Soa campus by the Minister of Higher Education and the Chinese ambassador to Cameroon.

The University of Yaoundé II provides several academic and non-academic facilities for its students. These facilities include amphitheatres, lecture halls, 64 computer stations, information centres, a restaurant, student accommodation, research centres and sports amenities (volleyball, football, handball, Basketball, Judo, wrestling, table tennis, lawn tennis, Paralympic sports). Some notable alumni of the University of Yaoundé II include Cabral Libii (Cameroonian Politician), Jovi (award winning musician), Charles Ebune (renown Journalist) and Odette Melono (Deputy Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in Holland)

About the city of Yaounde
Yaoundé is the capital of Cameroon and the second-largest city in the country. A German scientist named Georg Zenker led a group of people who settled in Yaoundé in 1888. Cameroon emerged as a major source of slaves in the 16th century during the slave trade. After the abolition of Transatlantic Slave Trade in the 1800s, European countries remained active in Africa. Then in 1884, the German Gustav Natchigal signed a treaty with two Douala chiefs that led to the German annexation of Cameroon. The first capital of German Kamerun was Buea and then the capital was later transferred to Yaoundé in 1909. After the First World War, the defeated Germany lost all its overseas colonies and so Cameroon became a Protectorate administered by France and Great Britain. In 1919, the administration of the Centre region and thus the city of Yaoundé fell solely under French rule till the country’s independence in 1960.
After the end of
World War II, nationalism emerged in both British Cameroons and French Cameroun that led to the formation of political parties like the socialist Union des Populations du Cameroun (UPC) in 1948. UPC called for independence from Great Britain and France and the reunification of both territories of Cameroon. On 1st of January 1960, France granted independence to French Cameroun. Ahmadou Ahidjo became the first president of the Republic of Cameroon. In 1961, President Ahidjo reunified British Cameroons with the Republic of Cameroon and Yaoundé became the capital of the newly formed Federal Republic of Cameroon.
Yaoundé has a tropical wet and dry climate, with relatively constant temperatures throughout the year. Yaounde is mostly made up of the Bantus group that have a distinct dialect, music, culture and cuisine. Its economy depends mainly on administrative services, commerce, and transportation.

Yaoundé is Cameroon’s administrative capital and centre of government activities. To that effect, all ministries and diplomatic missions are located in the city and this makes it much easier for its inhabitants to access vital information/documents compared to inhabitants of other cities due to the highly centralised nature of the country’s government. These administrative institutions are also fertile areas in which university students can carry out their internships. Yaoundé hosts several bus travel agencies, a railway station and the Nsimalen International Airport that enables movements within and out of the city. The city encourages mass research and intellectual exploration through its research institutes, national library, national museum and national archives. Sports competitions, especially football matches are among the major event that bring together the Yaoundé city dwellers. To that effect, the city boasts of a Multipurpose Sports Complex, the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium and the Olembe stadium, used for national and international sports events.

The city is predominantly Christian and it provides several places of worship such as the Our Lady of Victories Cathedral, Union of Baptist Churches in Cameroon and the Evangelical Church of Cameroon. The city houses several higher educational institutions with both national and sub-regional prestige. Yaoundé also has lots of primary and secondary. As for health, the city has several hospitals, clinics and medical centres staffed by professional medics. Yaounde also has a lot of out of campus student hostels built by private landlords/investors. Students who are considering to further their studies in Yaoundé will meet a city with all the crucial academic, infrastructural and social facilities needed for pleasant university experience.
