Uyo is the state capital of Akwa Ibom, in southern Nigeria. Uyo was established as a province by the colonial masters in 1959. They had as aim to split the Ibibio tribe into smaller administrative units for effective governance. Some sources trace the history of Ibibio to the Benue valley (Talbot), while others argue that the Ibibio people migrated from Cameroon. This city has a tropical climate that is characterised by a significant amount of rainfall and short dry seasons. Uyo people are of the Ibibio stock and speak the Ibibio language. They have a culture that is expressed in Ekpo, Ekpe masquerades and dances. The city’s economy depends mainly on its resources such as Gas & Oil, limestone, silver nitrate, gold, coal and glass sand.

The city of Uyo maintains a host of historic edifices such as the Amalgamation House, Ibom Connection and the National Museum of Colonial History that houses collections centres, ethnographic items and antiquities. Another popular attraction in the city is its parks such as the Unity Park and Discovery Park that are open for social events and recreational activities.
