University of Mpumalanga (UMP) is a public university located in Mbombela, South Africa. It is a patchwork of three existing institutions – the Lowveld College of Agriculture, the hospitality school at KaNyamazane and the Siyabuswa Education Campus. The roots of the university go back to 2010 when the Minister of Higher Education appointed two task teams to investigate the feasibility of establishing new universities in Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape. The Mpumalanga task team submitted a favourable report in September 2011, recommending the establishment of a new University in Mpumalanga. The University of Mpumalanga, a comprehensive university, was formally and legally promulgated through the publication of Government Notice (No. 36772) on 22 August 2013 and launched on the 31st of October 2013, and its inaugural enrolment was in February 2014. The university’s growing campuses are located in Mbombela and Siyabuswa.

The University of Mpumalanga is one of two new universities in South Africa, with Sol Plaatje University being the other. The university is committed to the provision of a suite of focused programmes aimed solely at contributing in a massive sense to the enhancement of skills and learning – to local, regional, provincial and national excellence in areas which add significant value to people and to the society. UMP exists as an answer to the absence of higher education programmes in geographic areas which had previously not had the privilege of regional access to these institutions. The University aims for enrolment of 18000 students over the next decade, but it currently has a student population of about 3560 students.

The University of Mpumalanga has several facilities and services that contribute to a conducive academic environment for its university community. The university opened its doors in 2014 in existing buildings, some of which have been extensively refurbished. Since then it has undergone upgrades and renovations of the existing facilities, such as the refurbishment of teaching venues, student resources (library), offices for university staff members, student residences, and procurement of new furniture and teaching equipment. Major construction started in October 2014 for three new multi-storey buildings. The facilities at Mbombela include three buildings, students residence building to accommodate 240 students, including common amenities and study spaces; a multi-purpose building with large raked auditorium (250 seater), offices, seminar spaces and lecture venues; a science building with four state of the art science laboratories, multiple lecture venues (eight venues), auditorium (250 seater), offices, library, IT Centre and a student canteen. The new science building can accommodate in excess of 1 300 students and will act as a mini-campus. On the Siyabuswa campus, the developments include extensive renovation undertaken in 2013 and 2014 of existing teaching facilities, six student residence buildings (accommodating 312 students), a student centre with gym, canteen and a games room, and a sports field. Currently nearing completion is the construction of a new student residence comprising 100 beds, complete with common rooms and shared amenities, and 8 staff apartments.

Mbombela is a city in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. It doubles as the provincial capital. It was founded in 1895 by three brothers of the Nel family who grazed their cattle around the site during the winter months. It was called Nelspruit at the time, and during the Boer War, it served briefly as the seat of the government for the South African Republic. A railway station was built there, and Nelspruit was proclaimed a village in 1905 and a municipality in 1940. In October 2009, the South African government renamed the city “Mbombela”, the same name as the local municipality of which it is part. The city has a population of over 60000; it also features a  humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot summers. Due to the altitude, summers are not as hot as one might expect. Average annual temperatures range between 13 and 27 degrees celsius. The surrounding agricultural area produces oranges and other citrus fruits, tobacco, groundnuts, mangoes, avocados, cattle, and timber. It is the financial and banking capital of Mpumalanga province. Mbombela lies along the tourist route running northeast to Kruger National Park, and tourists from Mozambique stimulate the local economy.

The city host several entertainment venues with the most prominent being the Emnotweni Casino complex. The city has a civic centre with a large theatre that hosts regular events, and it has its own version of concert in the park with annual performances by musicians in the Lowveld Botanical Gardens. A number of cultural and agricultural shows hosted by the city include the Lowveld Agri show, the Innibos Arts festival and the Nelspruit Motor Show. Mbombela is on the Maputo Corridor, a major trade route linking Johannesburg to Maputo in Mozambique which, with the Trans-Kalahari Corridor, forms a transport trunk that crosses the entire subcontinent from Walvis Bay in Namibia on the Atlantic Ocean to Maputo on the Indian Ocean. The Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport and the Nelspruit Airport cater to the flying needs in and out of the city. Mbombela is home to the University of Mpumalanga, and it hosts a satellite campus of the Tshwane University of Technology. It is also home to  Agricultural Research Council’s Institute for Tropical and Subtropical Crops and a major facility of Citrus Research International (CRI). The town is well equipped to welcome aspiring students.
