About the city of Maroua
Maroua is capital of the Far North region of Cameroon. The city had a population of over  700,000 inhabitants in 2014. In the early 16th century, Cameroon emerged as a major source of slavery and the slave trade. After the abolition of Transatlantic Slave Trade in the 1800s, European countries remained active in Africa. The city got occupied by the Guiziga in the 17th century and the Mofu in the early 18th century.
Maroua people generally uphold the Fulbe culture. They speak the Fulfulde, practise nomadism and live by a moral code called the Pulaaku. Despite Maroua’s proximity to urban centres, some villages within the town have retained a rural appearance. This is what accounts for the quantity and quality of actors constituting the agricultural workforce. Maroua has the Sahelian climate – a climate that makes it hot and dry for most of the year. From the start of March to September, most people in the city sleep out of their homes because the heat is at its apex.

Maroua is the fifth largest city in Cameroon. It is the main centre of the Cameroonian cotton industry, housing the popular cotton company dubbed: ‘Société de développement du Coton’ (Sodecoton). Cameroon’s cotton company Sodecotton employs and collaborates with over 250,000 farmers in Northern Cameroon, making it one of the pillars of the national development strategy for the catton sector. Maroua also leads in the production of ginger in Cameroon. The inhabitants of Maroua believe that ginger is good for sexual health and gives the “power of a lion” to men who drink it.  The main religion in Maroua is Islam. To that effect, it hosts several mosques–the most prominent of which is the Great Mosque of Douggoi. Nonetheless, recent reports suggest that 48% of the population is Christian and as such a lot of Christian churches can be found in the city as well. The main transportation means within the city are motorbikes. The cost of transportation through motorbikes is so cheap that a distance worth 250 FCFA in regions like Yaoundé and Douala, costs just 50 FCFA in Maroua. Finally, the town has some clinics and hospitals that serve the needs of the ill population.
