The University of Maiduguri, also known as UNIMAID, is a federal university located in Maiduguri, Borno State, north-eastern Nigeria. UNIMAID was created in 1975 as a second-generation University by the then federal military government. The university started with no physical structures of its own. It is only in April 1976 that it assumed the premises owned by the former North East College of Arts and Science (NECAS). The totality of bequeathed elements included; office furniture, physical structures and the NECAS staff.

The University of Maiduguri is a major higher institution of learning in the north-eastern part of the country. A lecturer from the University of Maiduguri was awarded the World Championship in Physics in 2019. This competition is considered the biggest tournament in Physics worldwide. Amidst the insecurity in the area and to ensure security in the university premises, there is a team of 50 security men constantly hovering around the university. The university has an enrolment number of over 26,000 students.

The University of Maiduguri provides a series of academic and non-academic facilities to its students. These facilities include a library, an ICT Centre, the UNIMAID radio, a university press, a teaching hospital, laboratories, staff quarters, university hostels and the UNIMAID sports complex. Some notable alumni of UNIMAID include Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe (Deputy Governor of Kaduna State), Umar Buba Bindir (Agricultural engineer and Director-General of the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion), Sen. Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan (Senate President of Nigeria) and Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum (Politician, Governor of Borno State)

The University of Maiduguri accepts applications from local and international students for its Bachelors, Masters and PhD level programmes.

Bachelor’s Programmes: The two main ways to get admission into UNIMAID are either through “JAMB UTME Exam” or “Direct Entry”.
  Admission Requirements for Direct Entry Candidates:
➤ Candidates should have one of the following qualifications; Cambridge A’Level, GCE A’Level, HND, ND, NCE, IJMB, JUPEB.
➤ You will need to be at least 16 years of age.
➤ Possess five O’Level credit passes (WAEC/WASSCE, NECO, GCE or NABTEB) including English language and Mathematics. It must be in not more than two sittings.
➤ Direct entry candidates do not need to write JAMB UTME. They just need to acquire and fill the JAMB Direct Entry Form.
*After a satisfactory admission screening or entrance test/interview, you will be directly admitted to the 200 Level (second year) course of your choice.
  Admission Requirements for JAMB UTME Candidates:
➨ Candidates seeking admission into 100 Level (first year) are required to write the JAMB UTME exam and score at least 160.
*Those who chose UNIMAID as their first choice and scored 160 & above in the JAMB UTME will then write UNIMAID’s Post UTME exam.
*Successful candidates will be given admission after consideration of their score at both the JAMB UTME and UNIMAID’s Post UTME exam.
➨ You will need to be at least 16 years of age.
➨ Possess five O’Level credit passes (WAEC/WASSCE, NECO, GCE or NABTEB) in 3 relevant subjects plus English language and Mathematics. It must be in not more than two sittings.
➨ Candidates must choose the correct JAMB subject combination for their desired bachelor’s degree programme/course.
➨ Candidates must also meet the stipulated Post UTME cut-off mark for their desired/chosen bachelor’s programme.

Master’s Programmes: To qualify for Master’s Degree Programmes, candidates must:
■ Possess a first/Bachelor degree from UNIMAID or any other recognised university

PhD Programmes: To qualify for PhD Programmes, candidates must:
■ Possess a Master’s degree with a CGPA of 4.00 on a 0.00 to 5.00 scale from the University of Maiduguri or any other recognized University.

HOW TO APPLY
The University of Maiduguri has set up an online portal to assist candidates seeking enrolment into its institution. Hence, the applicant should visit the website: https://www.portal.unimaid.edu.ng/login to create an account, choose a course and follow all other relevant steps on the application process.  UNIMAID’s JAMB cut off mark is 180 and 160 for its POST-UTME score. The application period into UI generally runs during the months of July to October.

Maiduguri is the capital and the largest city of Borno State in north-eastern Nigeria. The city has a total population of 777,088 inhabitants. The name Maiduguri is a combination of two words, namely “Mai” and “Duwuri”. Mai is a Kanuri word referring to a “King or leader” and Duwuri means “a thousand”. Maiduguri (Mai+Duwuri) means “Thousand Kings” thus Maiduguri is a land of a “Thousand-Kings”. It was founded in 1907 by Abubakar Garbai of Borno and established as the capital of the Bornu Kingdom. By 1908, the Old Maiduguri was chosen by the British to serve as their military headquarters. Since the mid-1960s, Maiduguri has witnessed a flare-up of inter-religious riots. These insurgencies persistent until 2009, when the city saw the growth of the terrorist group Boko Haram. The Boko Haram insurgency persisted for years and led to the doubling of security measures that have weakened the group severely. Maiduguri has a local steppe climate that is characterised by little rainfall. It has an average annual temperature of 25.8 °C. Maiduguri’s economy is mainly dependent on trade and services.

Maiduguri is has a railway line that connects it to other cities like Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kafanchan, Kuru, Bauchi, and finally Maiduguri. The best transportation means within the city is through moto bikes, taxis and buses. The city also possesses an international airport dubbed the Maiduguri International Airport. The city houses numerous touristic attractions that open its doors to the city dwellers and outsiders. Some of these attractions include the National Gallery of Art, Maiduguri, the Chad Basin National Park, Mandara Mountains, the Sambisa game reserve, the Alliance Française Maiduguri and the Kyarimi Park (the oldest and largest zoo in Nigeria). The city encourages sports and sporting activities for both sports actors and spectators through its numerous fields and centres. The most notable of these is the 10,000 person capacity and multi-use stadium. Finally, the city houses several specialised, international and national healthcare centres that cater to the needs of the ill population.
