The University of Lagos, also known as Unilag, is a federal university located in Lagos State, southwestern Nigeria. Unilag was officially established in the year 1962, in Yaba, Lagos by an Act of the Federal Parliament. Before Unilag’s establishment in 1962, the only higher education institutions in Lagos were a teachers’ training college and the Yaba College of Technology. To that effect, a UNESCO Advisory Commission presented a report calling for the establishment of the University in September 1960. Hence, the university saw the day in 1962 and a three-phase building project was launched between 1962 and 1970. This construction led to the building of a university roughly half its current size. Unilag currently operates in three Campuses, namely: the main campus in Akok, the College of Medicine in Surulere and the third campus in Yaba.

The University of Lagos is among the oldest universities in Nigeria. Unilag is currently ranked as the 4th best university in Nigeria according to Webometrics. A team of three students from the University of Lagos won the 2019 Hackathon for Justice Competition organised by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in partnership with Facebook and AfricaTeenGeeks. Unilag screens its newly-admitted students for hard drugs before allowing them to go on with their registration. The university recently set up a task force to prevent issues of sexual harassment occurring in several Nigerian Universities. Unilag has an enrolment of over 60000 students and a staff of over 3,365. This staff number is broken down as follows; Academic staff-1,123, Administrative staff-1,065 and some contract staff aswell.

The University of Lagos provides several academic and non-academic facilities for its students. Some of these facilities include a bookshop, a sports centre, the Unilag chapel, the Unilag mosque, the Afe Babalola Hall, a guest house, an auditorium, a lagoon front, a teaching hospital, amphitheatres and a library. Some notable alumni of Unilag include Ousainou Darboe (Gambian Minister of Foreign Affairs), Ibrahim Dankwambo (former Governor of Gombe State), Richard Mofe-Damijo (Nollywood actor), Abayomi Owope (TV presenter), Genevieve Nnaji (Nollywood actress) and Ufuoma McDermott (model and actress).
