The city of Jos is the administrative capital of Plateau State. Jos has a total population of about 883,369 inhabitants. The word “Jos” which is the wrong spelling of ‘Gwosh’ by the Hausa who settled on the site, means “body”. Jos traces its history back to the Nok people, who were the earliest settlers in the region. After the British invasion of the city, the area was administered through direct rule, since Jos was not under the Fulani emirates where indirect rule was used. The Fulanis who settled in Jos are responsible for turning the city into a trading centre. Jos grew rapidly after the British discovered vast tin deposits, tin and columbite. These resources were extensively mined in the area up until the 1960s. Jos is still often referred to as “Tin City”.

It was made the capital of Benue-Plateau State in 1967 and became the capital of the new Plateau State in 1975. Jos has a tropical climate with an annual temperature of 22.8 °C. English is the official language in the city, although Hausa has gained acceptability as a medium of communication. Jos is a city with a sophisticated culture; it is a concentration of people from almost every nook and cranny of Nigeria. These diverse cultures diffuse and create one culture which everyone now shares. The economy of Jos mostly depends on export, industrial production and agriculture.

Jos is the state capital and the area where most commercial activities of Plateau state take place. The city hosts several industries and companies such the National Centre for Remote Sensing, NASCO group, Standard Biscuits, Grand Cereals and Oil Mills, Zuma steel west Africa, aluminium roofing industries, Jos International Breweries among others. These are some Institutions where students can carry out internships or find employment.
The city has some touristic attractions like the Jos Wildlife Park with different species of animals (Rock pythons, marabou storks, Baboons, Honey Badgers, Camels and various flora) and the Jos Museum that preserves a collection of finely crafted pottery. Jos also has a 40,000 seat capacity stadium known as Jos Stadium mostly used for football. Another available sports amenity is the Jos Golf Course that hosts many golfing competitions with players coming from both within and outside the state. Finally, the city has several hospitals and clinics that are always open to cater to the needs of the ill population. An assessment of these facilities may serve as a strong point for considering UNIJOS as a place to further your studies.
