Iringa is a town found in the region of Iringa, Tanzania. It is located in the southern highlands of Tanzania, near Dodoma, the country’s legislative capital, and Morogoro, the agricultural centre. It is the administrative capital of the Iringa Region. It was historically a centre of colonial administration, and during the German occupation, the German military constructed the town as a fortified defence against marauding Hehe tribal warriors, intent on driving them out of the region. The climate in the town averages between 25 degrees Celsius and 13 degrees Celsius annually. Iringa boasts a population of over 150000. It is a well-established industrialised base, with food processing and logistics industries, although most of the focus is on regional agriculture and production.

Iringa is blessed with quiet and peaceful streets, and the market offers a colourful scene of traditional African culture. It is known as the Gateway to the South when heading into the Southern Highlands. Iringa equally leads to the Ruaha National Park, Tanzania’s crown jewel of national parks. There are Safari & Tour companies in Iringa town who offer day or overnight trips to the nearby National Parks. Among some of the remarkable landmarks of Iringa, the historical architecture owing to colonial German presence can be observed in the town. The “talking stone”, Gangilonga Rock offers a great view of the town. About 15 kilometres from Iringa the Isimila Stone Age Site can be accessed by “daladala” or taxi. There is a static display of recovered stone age tools including handaxes and cleavers. The town is also a minor transport hub for regular bus travellers, and a centre for trucking services to Dar es Salaam, Mbeya, Songea, and Dodoma and other regions of Tanzania. Iringa has several institutions of higher learning, chief among which is the University of Iringa – offering students a prime opportunity for higher education.
