The University of Gitwe (UG) is a private university located in Nyanza, Rwanda. The university received its official accreditation in 2011 by the Ministry of Education of Rwanda. The foundations of UG however were laid in 1993 when the lack of an institution of higher learning in the region forced its establishment.
Before then, it was a major concern to secondary school graduates in need of further education. The operation of UG was smooth until activities of the universities got suspended in 1994 as a result of the Rwandan genocide that saw close to 900,000 Tutsis murdered by the Hutus.
The University of Gitwe reopened its doors in 1997 with two programmes; Nursing Science and Human Biology. The University then continued its operations but it was only in 2011 that it received full operating license to operate as a completely autonomous university.

The University of Gitwe has one major campus in Gitwe with its most notable faculty being the Faculty of Medicine. The Faculty of Medicine of UG has been one of the best private trainers of medical personnel in Rwanda.
The faculty has signed Memoranda of Understanding with different practising hospitals which provide the necessary expertise needed to its medical students. Some of these hospitals are CHUB Hospital, RMH, RUHANGO Hospital and KAKGAYI Hospital amongst others.
UG is affiliated to the Christian Adventist Religion, and it has set its goals at offering higher learning and academic excellence based on the Seventh-day Adventist Church philosophy.

The University of Gitwe has diverse academic and non-academic facilities designed to suit the use of students and staff of the university. Some academic facilities of the university include a fully equipped library with different scientific publications, a computer science laboratory, a practical laboratory for medical and nursing students. Some of the non-academic facilities of UG are the sporting facilities, a health clinic, and accommodation facilities.

Nyanza is a district in Rwanda and the capital of the Southern province. The  Nyanza is a Bantu word meaning lake, which probably refers to a large lake to the west of Nyanza town. Nyanza was the capital of the Kingdom of Rwanda from 1958 to 1962. During the Rwandan genocide, the town of Nyanza was the site of a large massacre of Tutsis and moderate Hutus. Nyanza has a population of over 320,000 people who have based their economic livelihood on predominantly agriculture. It is said to still hold’s the country’s cultural heritage through the two museums, the King’s palace at Rukali and the national Art gallery at Rwesero. The climate in Nyanza is warm and overcast. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 58°F to 79°C and is rarely below 55°C or above 83°C.
