The recommendations submitted by the committee led to the creation of the University of Energy and Natural Resources at Sunyani on February 8, 2011. It got officially recognised on December 31, 2011, by the 830, Act of Parliament. UENR is a multi-campus, operating in three campuses located in Sunyani, Nsoatre and Dormaa Ahenkro.

The University of Energy and Natural Resources is known for being part of the 4-year research programme that created partnerships between the private sector and the smallholder tree crop (cocoa, oil palm, macadamia, and mango).

In 2018, UENR was the only African university to reach the semi-finals of the $7 Million Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE; a global competition challenging teams to advance deep-sea technologies for autonomous, fast and high-resolution ocean exploration.

UENR’s Department of Energy and Environmental Engineering was honoured with the “Wash Research Award” by the International Society of Neglected Tropical Diseases (ISNTD) at the 2016 Conference on Water and Sanitation held in London. UENR has a total enrolment of over 8,000 students.

The University of Energy and Natural Resources provides several academic and non-academic facilities for its students. These facilities include lecture halls, accommodation services (obligatory for first-year students), a journal of Energy and Natural Resources, laboratories and a farm.

ABOUT SUNYANI CITY
Sunyani is the capital town of the Bono region and the Sunyani Municipal of Ghana. The city has a total population of 70,299 inhabitants. The word ‘Sunyani’ was derived from the Akan word ‘Osono’ that stands for elephant.

The city was discovered in the 19th century and used as a camp by elephant hunters. Some years later, the colonial government earmarked Sunyani as a district headquarters.

Sunyani city is in constant growth with a thriving economy. Sunyani features a tropical climate, characterised by a range of high and low temperatures during the year; 25°C to 32°C.

The predominant ethnic group in the region is Akan, characterised by their distinct dialect, festivals and customs. Sunyani’s economy is predominantly agrarian, with approximately 48% of the population engaged in agriculture production.

Sunyani’s conduciveness is heavily reinforced by its high-quality water supply and regular electricity, supplied by the Volta River Authority (VRA).

It is regularly flooded by several inhabitants with administrative and financial goals, mainly because the city houses numerous public offices, companies and financial institutions, such as the Zenith Bank, Agricultural Development Bank of Ghana, Stanbic Bank, Bank of Ghana, etc.

Sunyani follows a triennial road and rail construction & rehabilitation strategy, which suggest that the coming years may be bright for the city’s roadway. This city also encourages movements by servicing flights within and out of its location through the Sunyani Airport.

It boasts of several touristic attractions that embrace visitors and local inhabitants such as the Jubilee Park, the Kintampo falls and the Lake Volta. Sunyani established an effective city communication system, by opening over 6,800 direct telephone lines, linked to most district capitals.

The city boasts of several Star-rated hotels, luxury guesthouses and hostels, of affordable prices.

Moreover, in Sunyani is found another top university named the Catholic University College of Ghana. Finally, the city ensures a healthy life for its inhabitants through the numerous hospitals, clinics and medical centres that are present and open to the public.  These facilities are vital points to look into when considering UENR for tertiary education.
