ABOUT THE CITY OF WINNEBA
Winneba is a town and the capital of the Effutu Municipal District in the Central Region of Ghana. Historical accounts have it that the name Winneba originated from sailors who plied along the Atlantic Coast and were blessed by a favourable wind along the bay. From their constant use of the words’ windy bay,’ the name Winneba was coined. In the colonial days, Winneba was the second seat of administration in the Central Province of the Gold Coast (the then Ghana). Because of its salubrious weather, the colonial government made it a convalescing place for its European civil servants.  During the early post-independence days, Winneba was particularly famous for the Ideological Institute established by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah which later became the “Mecca” for freedom fighters from all over Africa.  It now serves as the capital of the Effutu Municipal District. Winneba features a tropical climate with an average temperature of 26.7°C. The Winneba people are from the Efutu clan, and key hallmarks of their culture are the celebration of festivals, hunting and beliefs in ancestral gods. Winneba’s economy is highly dependent on the fishing industry and agriculture.

Ghana’s Central Region has more than 150 health services that are well-equipped to cater to the needs of the entire population. The region boasts of several touristic attractions that welcome and attract both the inhabitants and strangers. Some of these attractions include the Kakum National Park, which is one of the popular National Parks in Ghana, the Cape Coast Castle, designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Site and the Elmina Castle, another World Heritage Site. The region boasts of decent and standard hospitality units. In terms of accommodation, there exist 3-star hotels, 2-star hotels, 1-star hotels, guest houses, budget hotels and cheaper hostels. The best way to get around a city is by taxi and by the 15-20 passenger minibuses (cheapest form of transportation). Finally, the region has three multi-use stadia that are open to sports actors and spectators. Ghana’s Central Region is a luring likelihood for students looking to make the best out of their education and social life.
