About the city of Dschang
Dschang is a city located in the West region of Cameroon and the capital of the Ménoua division. This city was discovered in 1895 by the German officer Eugene Zingraft. The Germans named the city “Dschang” meaning “Land of Idle Talk”. After the First World War, Cameroon became a colony administered by Great Britain and France. In 1919, the administration of the West Region and thus the city of Yaoundé became solely French. Dschang served as the capital of the West region during the French administration. On the 1st January 1960, Cameroon gained its independence and the capital of the region left from Dschang to Bafoussam.  People from Dschang are predominately Bamileke, they speak a semi-Bantu language and are related to Bantu peoples. A significant feature in this culture is the role of a paramount fon and Masquerades during special events such as funerals, important palace festivals and other royal ceremonies. Dschang has a tropical climate with an average annual temperature of about 20.4 °C. The city’s economy is mainly dependent on animal (pig) rearing, agriculture and tourism.

Dschang keeps a series of historical edifices with cultural & historical significance such as the reunification monument and the Dschang Civilisation museum managed in collaboration with the city of Nantes. The city has some public attractions that welcome strangers and visitors; some of these attractions are the Fongo-Tongo and Foreke, the traditional Bafou and other chiefdoms. The Dschang climate centre is a park with bungalows and apartments designed to welcome and lodge visitors. The city has a popular market known as the Dschang market that supplies traditional food, arts, sculptures and other important items. Dschang is a mountainous city that is endowed with waterfalls, caves and rivers that serve as touristic attractions. The town has roads linking it to other regions like Yaoundé and Bamenda. To that effect, it has parks for buses and an airstrip for planes. The city has several primary, secondary and higher education institutes. Finally, the city has several clinics, hospitals and traditional medicine services that cater to the needs of the ill city’s ill patients. These facilities serve the broader community and may be of great use to those wishing to study in UDs.
