The University of Calabar, also called Unical, is an accredited federal university hailing from Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. It was formerly a campus of the University of Nigeria since 1973 and became the University of Calabar in the year 1975. The University of Calabar, also called Unical, is an accredited federal university hailing from Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. It was formerly a campus of the University of Nigeria since 1973 and became the University of Calabar in the year 1975. Unical started forty-three years ago with a small student body of about 900 against a staff of around 160. It has since grown into an institution that employs over 3000 staff members and enrolls over 40,000 students per annum. In Unical, male students are referred to as “Malabites” and females are dubbed “Malabresses”.

The University of Calabar is on a mission to build exceptional graduates and scholars in several fields while focusing on their theoretical, practical and entrepreneurial skills. The institution aims to be recognized globally as one of the universities churning out competitive and research-driven graduates. Unical is renowned for being one of the first universities in Nigeria to automate its alumni relations and the registration process for students. It has also gone ahead to provide a digital transcript request and processing service. The University of Calabar strives to abide by its motto “Knowledge for Service”, by enforcing a philosophy built around using knowledge to serve humanity.

There are several facilities at the University of Calabar, including but not limited to, lecture halls, faculty buildings, student hostels (Malabo), a library, sports unit, laboratories. Over the years, the University of Calabar has produced widely known people such as singer Iyanya, actresses Stephanie Okereke, Kate Henshaw-Nuttal, Uche Jumbo and politicians Grace Folashade Bent, Osita Izunaso and Ita Enang. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The University of Calabar accepts applications from local and international students for its Undergraduate, Masters and PhD level programmes.

Undergraduate: Applicants should be at least 16 years of age. Students aspiring to be admitted into first year at the University of Calabar must have at least five credits at the Ordinary Level exams. Acce.. more

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The University of Calabar accepts applications from local and international students for its Undergraduate, Masters and PhD level programmes.

Undergraduate: Applicants should be at least 16 years of age. Students aspiring to be admitted into first year at the University of Calabar must have at least five credits at the Ordinary Level exams. Accepted exams include WASSCE, GSCE and other equivalents. Applicants should score over 180 in UTME and above 200 in JAMB. To qualify for direct entry, applicants must have one of these certificates: NCE, OND, IJMB, JUPEB, Advanced Level. For A’ Level, at least 2 subject passes.

Masters: Applicants are required to possess a First or Bachelors degree in a subject relevant to the field of study. They should have a GPA of 3.00 and above (on a five-point scale) or at least 2.75 (on a 4-point scale) from an accredited university.

PhD: Applicants should hold a Masters’ degree from a recognized university and their cumulative GPA should be at least 4.00 on a 5-point scale and 3.00 on a 4 point scale.

HOW TO APPLY
The University of Calabar has put in place an online portal where students can easily apply for enrollment. Information is available on the websites https://myunical.edu.ng/ and https://www.unical.edu.ng/. For first-year students, the application period typically runs from mid-July to August. Undergraduate applicants apply by writing the JAMB examination and indicating Unical as their first choice. Applicants who reach the cut-off mark will have to indicate interest to write the post-UTME exam on the website https://myunical.edu.ng/. For graduate school, the application period typically runs from September to October. The website for application is http://unicalonline.edu.ng/admissions/.

Calabar is a small city located in Cross River State, Nigeria. Its name has evolved over the years. From once being a kingdom called ‘Akwa Akpa’, it is now known as Calabar, Calabari and even Calbari. Calabar is at the forefront of tourism in Nigeria and has been dubbed the “tourism capital”. Calabar’s seaport is a major site for the entry and exit of goods into the country. The city has a tropical monsoon climate, which features long rainy seasons and short dry seasons. Temperatures that range from 25 to 28 degrees Celsius are constant throughout the year.

Calabar has many landmarks, which will appeal to tourists and students, both local and visiting. There is the presence of a botanical garden, a museum, a sports stadium, a cultural center, a park, and many others. The University of Calabar is connected to these facilities by a network of roads. The city has a seaport and an airport, linking it with the rest of the country and the world. Students will find that the city of Calabar could be a gateway to many other places.

Scholarships

 There are no fixed scholarships at Unical, but spontaneous scholarships could be offered by willing sponsors. Last year, 47 scholarships were offered to the University of Calabar students by the Chinese government. There may be more to come in the upcoming years. Also, Unical awards an annual Pro-Chancellor’s Prize to the best-behaved student of the graduating class, in a bid to promote good character.
