The University of Arusha (UoA) is a private university located in Arusha, Tanzania. The foundations of the university can be traced back to 1970 when the Tanzanian Mission of the Seventh Day Adventist Church thought it necessary to establish a ministerial training institution at Ikizu for its workers.
In 1975, the Tanzanian Union Mission merged the Adventist School of Health Evangelism and the ministerial course at Ikizu to form the Arusha Adventist Seminary (AAS) and moved it to a new site at Usa River, 24 kilometres from Arusha.
In 1978, AAS was upgraded to a college status and renamed Tanzania Adventist Seminary and College (TASC) and in 1992, it was changed to Tanzanian Adventist College (TAC) and the ministerial course was replaced by a two-year diploma programme in Theology. Later in 1996, TAC was affiliated to Griggs University in the USA.
Under this affiliation, TAC offered BA in Theology and Religion. By 2003, TAC began processes to gain full autonomy as a university. It was granted a letter of interim authority by the Higher Education Accreditation Council (HEAC) and in 2006, TAC became fully licensed and accredited by the Tanzanian Commission for Universities as the University of Arusha.
In January 2011 the University of Arusha charter was vetted and was finally signed by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania in 2013.

UoA has two main campuses in Arusha namely: The Main campus and the Town campus. The university has a total student enrollment of over 1,091 students. The University of Arusha is accredited by the Adventist Accrediting Association (AAA) of Seventh-Day Adventist Schools, Colleges and Universities.
It is also affiliated to the Tanzanian Commission of Universities (TCU). In its goal to be the guardian of the society, UoA has set its mission at providing accessible and affordable wholistic education which will empower individuals to continue learning and serving the church and the international communities.

UoA has a host of facilities which have been made available for use to both the university staff and the students, with accommodation facilities at the main campus for students, a school cafeteria for both students and staff, a football pitch, a volleyball field, netball field and a basketball court.
The university also has its own medical clinic and a fully equipped library. As part of its outreach activities, UoA in collaboration with the University of North Carolina (UNC) launched in 2011, an Emergency Medicine Global Health Leadership program to help developing nations improve on their emergency service programs.

The University of Arusha as a religious institution has been renowned in Tanzania for producing some of the best theologian clerics. The university was honoured in 2020 when one of its student received the Monovisions Photography Award for the best black and white portrait picture.
