Kampala is the capital city of Uganda and the largest in the country. It is located in the southern part of the country, just north of Lake Victoria. Kampala existed as far back as the 19th century, north of the capital of what was then the Buganda Kingdom. In 1890 Kampala was selected as the headquarters of the Imperial British East Africa Company. The British fort on Old Kampala Hill remained the Ugandan colonial administrative headquarters until 1905 when it moved to Entebbe. Kampala became a municipality in 1949, and when Uganda gained independence in 1962 it became the capital. The City has a tropical rainforest climate, and does not have a typical dry season, but rather two annual wet seasons. Annual average temperatures go from 17.8 degrees Celsius to 27.8 degrees Celsius. The period between February and June experiences the heaviest amount of precipitation.

The total population of Kampala is over 3.2 million, with a diverse ethnic population drawn from all parts of the country, as well as neighbouring countries like the DRC, Rwanda, South Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia and even India and China. Kampala is situated in the country’s most prosperous agricultural section and is an exporter of coffee, cotton, tea, tobacco and sugar. The city’s industrial status is second only to Jinja, and it has numerous food, metal products and furniture enterprises, and its informal sector is a large contributor to the local GDP.

Known as the green city in the sun, Kampala is reported to be among the fastest-growing cities in Africa and has been ranked the best city to live in East Africa. It is home to the Kampala Business and Industrial Park, the industrial hub of the city located not far from the central business district. The city also houses the Uganda Museum and the Uganda National Theatre. It also boasts a prominent cultural centre, the Ndere Cultural Centre that aims to promote Ugandan and African music, dance and drama. The city hosted the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in 2017.
Kampala harbours several places of worship, including mosques, Hindu temples and Christian churches; the Old Kampala National Mosque can accommodate 12000 worshippers; the Namirembe Cathedral is one of several stunning views in the city, as well as the Baha’i House of Worship. It is the hub of the nation’s road network, and it lies on the railway line that goes from Kasese to Mombasa. It is also served by Port Bell on Lake Victoria and Uganda’s International Airport in Entebbe. Home to several higher education institutions like Makerere University, the International University of East Africa and Kampala University, the city proves favourable to students who wish to study in the city.
