Uganda Christian University (UCU) is a private university located in Mukono, Uganda. It is a not-for-profit Christian university chartered by the government of Uganda in 2004, the first private university to receive a government charter. The university was founded in 1997 by the Church of Uganda to equip students for productive, holistic lives of Christian service and faith. Uganda Christian University replaced the historic Bishop Tucker Theological College which trained clergy and educators during its 84-year history from 1913-1997. International partnerships were part of the Bishop Tucker Theological College’s missionary history, but by the late 1990s, the Church of Uganda sought to have a broader impact on society through university education – not only educating clergy but other professionals as well. This led to the establishment of Uganda Christian University. It counts campuses in Mukono, Kampala, Mbale, Kabale, and Arua.

Uganda Christian University ranks 9th in Uganda, according to Webometrics’ ranking of African universities. education at UCU integrates physical, social, emotional, and spiritual growth along with traditional academic learning. While the majority of faculty and students are Ugandan, UCU has attracted students from other African Great Lakes countries and a number of expatriate staff from North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. These international ties are in part historic through societies like the Church Mission Society and in part new ties formed among churches of the Anglican Communion. UCU was voted by christianuniversitiesonline.org as the most beautiful Christian university in Africa and the 50th in the world. The university has grown to count over 13000 students enrolled in its programmes.

Uganda Christian University has a number of facilities and services at the disposal of its university community that helps to enhance a conducive academic environment. it counts homely halls of residence equipped with computer laboratories with internet hotspots where one can enjoy high-speed internet connectivity. All the halls of residence have common rooms where students can relax and watch television (connected to DStv) in their free time. The UCU dining is popular among students for its nutritious and well-balanced meals. It has a well-equipped modern library that promotes learning and research goals. It sits 1,200 people, stores 250,000 volumes of books and 200 computers in the open terrace. The university counts a modern sports complex that gives students and staff a healthy balance of study/work and exercise. It includes a gym that is fully furnished with modern equipment. Because of UCU’s state-of-the-art sports facilities, the university has hosted several local and international sports tournaments.
Notable alumni from the university include Paul Moses Samson Naimanhye (Bishop of Busoga Diocese), Alengot Oromait (Member of Parliament for Usuk County), Daniel Kidega (4th Speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly), Grace Akallo (human rights activist).
