Sunyani Technical University (STU) is a public technical university located in Sunyani, Ghana. It was established in November 1967 as the Sunyani Technical Institute (SUTECH), in order to train middle school leavers in technical courses.
In January 1997, the Government upgraded Sunyani Technical Institute into Sunyani Polytechnic (SPOLY) in line with the government’s policy to stress on Technical/Vocational Education and Training (TVET) at the tertiary level.
The Polytechnics Act 745 empowers the institution to offer tertiary education programmes. Sunyani Polytechnic was later converted to Sunyani Technical University (STU), according to the Technical Universities Act 922 of 2016.

STU has two campuses called the Main Campus and Campus B both situated in Sunyani. It counts over 5,085 students and about 567 staff. The University aims to provide career-focused education in engineering, science and technology, and related disciplines with hands-on experience and entrepreneurial development.
It holds as values Excellence, Competence, Competitiveness, Responsiveness and Professionalism.

The University provides to its students’ academic facilities such as a library, laboratories and a well-equipped computer laboratory with software. None the less, it as well offers non-academic facilities like halls and hostels.
In 2019, STU introduced a Students’ Support Fund, where students who encounter financial challenges, can source funds to settle such challenges in order to complete their programmes in the university.
In the same year, the university set up an entrepreneurship hub with support from GOIL Ghana Limited, which is aimed at supporting students, businesses and other innovators to recognize opportunities, develop, launch, and commercialize their ideas and motivate them to bring out their entrepreneurship skills.

A notable alumnus of Sunyani Technical University is Emmanuel Kwaku Asiedu – CEO GRATIS Foundation (MOTI).

Sunyani Technical University is located in Sunyani. Other universities located in this town are the Catholic University College of Ghana and the University of Energy and Natural Resources.

Sunyani is the capital town of the Bono region and the Sunyani Municipal of Ghana.  The word ‘Sunyani’ was derived from the Akan word ‘Osono’ that stands for elephant. The city was discovered in the 19th century and used as a camp by elephant hunters. Some years later, the colonial government earmarked Sunyani as a district headquarters.  Sunyani features a tropical climate, characterised by a range of high and low temperatures during the year; 25°C to 32°C. The city has a total population of 70,299 inhabitants with Akan being the predominant ethnic group, characterised by their distinct dialect, festivals and customs. Sunyani city is in constant growth with a thriving economy. Its economy is predominantly agrarian, with approximately 48% of the population engaged in agriculture production.

Sunyani boasts of several touristic attractions that embrace visitors and local inhabitants such as the Jubilee Park, the Kintampo falls and the Lake Volta. Sunyani established an effective city communication system, by opening over 6,800 direct telephone lines, linked to most district capitals. It is regularly flooded by several inhabitants with administrative and financial goals, mainly because the city houses numerous public offices, companies and financial institutions, such as the Zenith Bank, Agricultural Development Bank of Ghana, Stanbic Bank, Bank of Ghana, etc.
