Kilifi is a coastal town in Kenya, located north of Mombasa. It’s near Kilifi Creek, along an estuary of the Goshi River, and serves as the capital of Kilifi County. The weather is generally warm throughout the year (above 25°C) with two seasons of moderate rainfall. Long periods of rain last from March to July, while the short periods last from October to December. The population of the town is just over 125000, while that of the entire county is over 1.4 million. Kilifi has a diverse demographic, being a cosmopolitan town with various ethnic groups; the Mijikenda make up 80% of population of the town, and other groups include Swahili-Arab descendants, Barawas, Bajunis and Somalis. Fishing is one of the major economic activities, although with time the town has slowly been transforming from a fishing village to basic industrial and service. The growth of the town was mainly fueled by the cashew nut milling factory, and since the transformation of the Institute of Agriculture into a university, commercial services have grown in recent years.

Kilifi is known for its beach and for the ruins of Mnarani, including mosques and tombs, dating from the 14th to the 17th century. There are several resorts located in the town, like Mnarani Club, Kilifi Bay Beach Resort and Baobab Lodge. The Kilifi County Hospital, which is also a referral hospital, serves all of Kilifi County, and also supports the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme. There are several other private clinics in the town. Kilifi is also home to Pwani University, a university with undergraduate and graduate programs, specializing in Coastal, Marine and Fisheries science, in addition to Agriculture and Microbial Science. The town offers an ideal environment for students considering higher education in a coastal region.
