About the city of ALEXANDRIA
Alexandria is a major economic centre and the second-largest city in Egypt. Its location is north-central Egypt, along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and was founded in 331 BC by Alexander the Great. After conquering Syria in 332 BC, Alexander the Great marched down into Egypt with his army and founded Alexandria in the town of Rhakotis. He set about the task of turning Alexandria City into a great capital. Despite being much admired by the Egyptians and even considered a demi-god, Alexander the Great left Egypt a few months later for Tyre in Phoenicia (modern-day Lebanon). Hence, the full expansion of Alexandria came under the rule of Alexander’s general Ptolemy, whose rule continued even after Alexander’s death in 323 BC.

The city grew to become the largest in the world at the time, and it attracted scholars, scientists, philosophers, mathematicians, artists and historians. The city became well-known for a variety of reasons, one of which was the Alexandrian Library. This library is estimated to have had over 500,000 books at the time. It was home to the Pharos and it had a lighthouse that ranked among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. However, the Pharos collapsed and the Great Library was torched. Part of the ancient city disappeared under the sea and the other part is what we consider the modern city of Alexandria. The 19th century kick-started a cosmopolitan renaissance, making Alexandria one of the Mediterranean’s key commercial hubs. The city of Alexandria has a borderline hot desert climate. The city is considered one of the wettest places in Egypt with temperatures ranging from 12 to 18 °C. The city is culturally ambivalent upholding both conservative and modern values. Alexandria’s economy is highly dependent on tourism, shipping and food processing. Alexandria and its environs account for roughly two-fifths of Egypt’s industrial production.

Alexandria is a city containing remnants of a once highly coveted civilisation. In this city is found the Bibliotheca Alexandrina which is the re-imaging of Alexandria’s ancient Great Library. It equally harbours several museums, monuments, pillars, antiques and texts with historical significance. During moments of distress and fatigue, inhabitant’s visit the Montazah Garden, an oasis of calm with tall palm trees and trimmed lawns. The Chinquapin Park is an additional recreational centre with aquatic facilities for periods when the weather heats up. One of the most vibrant and the oldest stadium in Africa known as the Alexandria Stadium is found in this city. The city services flights in and out of the city through its Alexandria Borg El Arab International Airport. It also possesses several medical centres and public schools such as Alexandria University and Pharos University in Alexandria.
