The North-West University (NWU) is a public university in South Africa. The university came into being in 2004, as part of the South African government’s plan to transform higher education, with the merger of 2 universities – the historically black University of North-West, with mostly black students from the rural communities, and the historically white Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, with mostly white Afrikaans from Christian backgrounds. These two universities merged and incorporated the Sebokeng Campus of the former Vista University, forming the North-West University, in a symbolic act of reconciliation and nation building. The University counts 3 campuses located in Potchefstroom, Mahikeng and Vanderbijilpark.

North-West University ranks 6th on Webometrics’ ranking of South African Universities. It is the second-largest university in South Africa. Multilingualism is part and parcel of the university, with English, Afrikaans and Setswana enshrined as common practice. In 2018 the university’s Potchefstroom Campus researchers created a new worldwide usable model to control the Fall Army Worm pest, equally identifying a natural process to deal with the pest. The university equally boasts a highly competitive student body, with the students of the Graphic Design subject group recently sweeping awards at two national competitions. The university also champions a campaign aimed at creating awareness of energy consumption and the impact it has on the environment. The university counts a student body of over 73000, with over 55000 undergraduates and 16000 postgraduates.

North-West University runs a facilities department responsible for multidisciplinary facility-related services, including planning, development, maintenance, operations, and space management of the university’s growing estates. NWU counts 5 research centres, including a Centre for Space Research, as well as 10 research units with some focusing on tourism and reformation technology. Alongside several sports facilities, the University equally counts a High Performance Institute of Sport, located on the Potchefstroom Campus, which offers state-of-the-art facilities and specialised staff for pre-season training performed by athletes from all over the world. The University’s Farm Labour and General Health programme seeks the improvement of nutrition in rural families, and the Centre for Community Law serves to offer legal advice. Notable alumni to graduate from North-Wes University include Gerhard Mostert (Rugby player), Warren Whiteley (Rugby Player), Katiego Maboe (award-winning tv presenter), Demi-Ligh Nel Peters (Miss Universe 2017).

North-West University offers admission at the undergraduate, diploma and postgraduate levels yearly. The admission requirements differ depending on what you want to study. Every programme in every department has specific requirements.

Entry requirements for Undergraduate Programmes
**Matriculation exemption – Higher Education South Africa HESA (Higher Education South Africa) was formed on 9 May 2005 and represents the heads of all public universities, universities of technology and comprehensive universities in South Africa. The SAMB (South African Matriculation Board) forms an integral part of HESA’s role. The SAMB advises the Minister of Education via HESA on the minimum general admission requirements for first degree studies at South African universities.
**Before admittance to a South African university, South Africans must first successfully complete the SANSC (South African National Senior Certificate) examinations. Those students that manage to obtain the appropriate standards in these examinations are accordingly awarded “matriculation exemption” status and may enrol for a first degree at a South African university.

Foreign Nationals
• All students who are either completing or have completed their schooling outside of South Africa and/ or through an alternate educational system must ascertain whether they have also earned “matriculation exemption”. In this regard, the SAMB regulates admission to first-degree studies by ensuring all students who did not complete a SANSC but who have an equivalent university entrance qualification, comply with the requisite criteria. The SAMB regularly updates the list of these alternate qualifications that are acceptable on face value for admission to first degree studies at South African universities.
• Matriculation exemption, a minimum average percentage plus individual programme criteria are the entrance requirements for Baccalaureus (undergraduate) degree studies.

International Students

• American High School diploma
• Cambridge
• International Baccalaureate (IB)
• Namibian Higher and Ordinary Level (formerly HIGCSE and IGCSE)
**For the exemption requirements according to the most common systems/ countries from which applications are normally received, contact the university for more details.
**If you are not sure whether you qualify for matriculation exemption, HESA offers an Online System of Assessment to enable prospective first-degree students who want to study at a South African university to assess whether they meet the minimum legal admission requirements.
**The system results will state whether an applicant meets the minimum legal requirements or not. If the applicant is successful, hard copies of certificates will have to be sent to the SAMB for verification and issuance of the exemption certificate.

Potchefstroom, also known as Potch, is an academic city in the North West Province of South Africa. It is the second-largest city in the province, along with Rustenburg. Potchefstroom, also known as Potch, is an academic city in the North West Province of South Africa. It is the second-largest city in the province, along with Rustenburg. Potch is the second-oldest European settlement in the Transvaal, after Klerksdorp. Until 1840 the town was part of the Republic of Winburg-Potchefstroom, a Boer Republic. It united with Pietermaritzburg in 1840, and by 1858 it had become the capital of the South African Republic. It was baptized the city of expertise after 1909 when colonial secretary Jan Smuts declared that the city should aim to be South Africa’s largest educational centre. The city has a local steppe climate, experiencing little rainfall throughout the year. Temperatures average 16.9 degrees Celsius, ranging between 22.2 degrees Celsius in January and 9.6 degrees Celsius in June. Potchefstroom has a population of over 128000, with a predominantly black population of 69.6%, and whites at 27.0 %. It is an industrial, service and agricultural growth point of the North West Province.

Potchefstroom is home to five higher education institutions and 30 other schools, as well as a number of research and training centres. It is equally known as the North West Province’s “Home of Sport”, being the headquarter of 17 major sports disciplines. The city council emphasises the maintenance and upgrading of its sports facilities. It has hosted two world-cup winning teams, in cricket and football respectively, and it provides a good air quality due to the absence of large factories. The city counts several national monuments and heritage sites – the Old Fort and Cemetery, the South African National Artillery Memorial, the Berlin Missionary Complex and the Goetz-Fleishack House are just a few of the national monuments available in Potch.
The city’s reputation as a city of expertise, as evidenced by its status as an educational hub, make it a good location for further education.
