Nkumba University (NU) is a private university located in Entebbe, Uganda. Established as part of a group of schools and colleges in 1994, it originally grew from a kindergarten that dates back to 1951. By 1969 it had become a vocational school, and in 1974 it changed to the Nkumba College of Commerce and Advanced Studies, and in 1994 it was transformed into a university. Its charter was granted in February 2007. The university campus is located on Nkumba Hill in Wakiso District, approximately 10 kilometres by road, north-east of Entebbe International Airport.

Nkumba University is one of the oldest private universities in Uganda. It is also one of the largest private universities in East Africa. The university is dedicated to promoting excellence in applied business education, with creativity, confidence, competence and character being pillars of this education. NU was one of the first universities in the country to introduce a Bachelor of Science degree programme in Petroleum Studies. The university is not affiliated with any particular religious organisation, but it accommodates several religious associations, which allow the students to fellowship along with religious beliefs and to devote adequate time to God. The student body counts over 10000 students, with over 300 administrative staff.

Nkumba University owns a host of facilities and provides several services that contribute to a conducive academic atmosphere for its university community. The university occupies a vast area of land on which its Entebbe and Kampala campuses are located. The built-up infrastructure containing teaching and learning lecture rooms, computer laboratories, students’ hostels, modern library with over 10,000+ books, wireless connectivity across the entire campuses, extra-curricular facilities for both indoor and outdoor make NU stand out amongst the private Universities. The location of the Kampala Campus makes it easy for students who cannot access Entebbe to comfortably undertake their studies with ease.
Notable alumni include Doreen Amule (Uganda Politician) and Katumba Wamala (Chief of defence forces of Uganda).

Entebbe is a city in Central Uganda, one of the regions of Uganda. It is located in the south-central part of the country, 34 kilometres south of Kampala. Entebbe bears its name from the period when a Baganda chief adjudicated legal cases in the area. It became a British colonial and administrative centre in 1893, when it was founded as a garrison post by Sir Gerald Portal, a colonial commissioner. It served in this capacity until 1958. The city has experienced some well-known events that made it famous across the world. The Entebbe International Airport was the site of an Israeli airborne commando raid on the night of July 3/4, 1976, that freed 103 hostages from a jet hijacked by Palestinian and West German militants. It was also from this airport, 2 decades earlier, that Queen Elizabeth II departed Africa to return to England in 1952 when she learned of her father’s death and that she had become Queen.
The climate in the city is moderate, belying its geographical location close to the equator – average temperatures range from 27 degrees Celsius to 17 degrees Celsius. The total population of the city is over 70000.

Entebbe is basically a residential centre for government employees, and as such, the city has no industry. It is, however, a transportation crossroads for eastern Africa, with an international airport and steamship connections via Lake Victoria to the countries of Kenya and Tanzania and to other parts of Uganda. It is also home to a veterinary research laboratory and a virus research institute, the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) – a government organisation which provides space to conduct research to the International Aids Vaccine Initiative HIV vaccine program, UK Medical Research Centre Laboratories (MRC), US Centre for Disease Control (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH). Touristic attractions in Entebbe include the National Botanical Gardens, the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, which doubles as the national zoo, and the historical site in Kigungu where the first catholic missionaries Brother Amans and Father Mon Maple Lourdel landed to establish the catholic faith in Uganda. The official residence of the President of Uganda, the State House, is located in Entebbe. Transportation within the city is by way of the road, through the use of motorcycles locally called “boda-boda”, minibus taxis known as “Matatus”, and by special hire. The city is home to Nkumba University, one of the more than thirty licensed institutions of tertiary education in Uganda, making it a viable candidate for prospective students.
