The Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria, also known as NCAT is a higher education institute located in Zaria, Kaduna State, northwestern Nigeria. The College was officially set up by Act. No 31 of 1964. The idea of a centre for aviation training in Nigeria was originally mooted at the 12th International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Assembly, held in California, USA in 1959. During this event, the Federal Government of Nigeria formally adjured the United Nations Development Programme to appoint an expert that will assess the actual requirements for setting up a Civil Aviation Training Centre in Nigeria. After this project was approved in 1963, a bill establishing a Centre for Civil Aviation Training at Zaria was passed by the Federal Legislature on 29th September 1964. The Centre was established as a joint programme between the Federal Government of Nigeria, the United Nations Development Programme, and the International Civil Aviation Organisation. However, this joint programme of assistance from the UNDP and ICAO came to an end on 31st December 1974, allowing the Federal Government of Nigeria assume full responsibility for the continued management and operation of the College. In 1977, the centre’s name was changed from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Training Centre (NCATC) to the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT).

The Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria is one of the best aviation schools in Nigeria and a foremost aviation training institution in the West African sub-region & ICAO Regional Training Centre of Excellence. The college is known for winning the ICAO Global Aviation Training (GAT) Awards as an aviation training institute with the highest number of trained instructors in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. It was equally recognised for having the highest number of ICAO courses conducted in 2015 & 2016. NCAT serves as a member of the ICAO TRAINAIR PLUS steering committee. The Federal Government recently acquired a modern multi-functional aircraft fire fighting simulator to be installed soon at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria.

The Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria possesses several academic and non-academic facilities, aimed at encouraging its students’ social wellbeing and academic pursuits. These facilities include an automatic aircraft firefighting simulator, an Information and Communication Technology Centre, planes, an Airport Power Supply System, a gym, classrooms, projectors, a swimming pool, and a laboratory. Some notable alumni of NCAT include; Al-Amin Bajoga (Aircraft Engineer – Avionics), Maiwada Abdulaziz (Ag. General Manager, Electronic Communication at the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency), Martins Amupitan (Principal Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Instructor) and Kanyinsola Fagbayi (Technical Assistant at the Glenwood Property Development Company Limited).

The Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria accepts applications from local and international students for its Diploma, Bachelors, Masters and PhD level programmes.

National Diploma’s (ND) Programmes: To qualify for National Diploma’s Programmes, candidates must:
■ Possess a minimum of WASC/GCE/NECO/SSCE NTC “O” Level or its equivalent with at least five subjects including Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English language.
■ Obtain a minimum JAMB UTME score of 180 for polytechnics (For candidates who have met the JAMB score but did not select NCAT as their choice are eligible to apply).

Higher National Diploma’s (HND) Programmes: To qualify for HND’s Programmes, candidates must:
■ Possess a National Diploma with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 and above in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical/ Electronic Engineering Technology, Aircraft Engineering Technology and a minimum of one year Post ND cognate working experience.
■ Possess a National Diploma in Aviation Management/Business Administration/ Public Administration with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 and a minimum of one-year cognate working experience.

Bachelor’s Programmes: The two main ways to get admission into NCAT are either through “JAMB UTME Exam” or “Direct Entry”.
  Admission Requirements for Direct Entry Candidates:
➤ Candidates should have one of the following qualifications; Cambridge A’Level, GCE A’Level, HND, ND, NCE, IJMB, JUPEB.
➤ You will need to be at least 16 years of age.
➤ Possess five O’Level credit passes (WAEC/WASSCE, NECO, GCE or NABTEB) including English language and Mathematics. It must be in not more than two sittings.
➤ Direct entry candidates do not need to write JAMB UTME. They just need to acquire and fill the JAMB Direct Entry Form.
*After a satisfactory admission screening or entrance test/interview, you will be directly admitted to the 200 Level (second year) course of your choice.
  Admission Requirements for JAMB UTME Candidates:
➨ Candidates seeking admission into 100 Level (first year) are required to write the JAMB UTME exam and score at least 120.
*Those who chose NCAT as their first choice and scored 120 & above in the JAMB UTME will then write NCAT’s Post UTME exam.
*Successful candidates will be given admission after consideration of their score at both the JAMB UTME and NCAT’s Post UTME exam.
➨ You will need to be at least 16 years of age.
➨ Possess five O’Level credit passes (WAEC/WASSCE, NECO, GCE or NABTEB) in 3 relevant subjects plus English language and Mathematics. It must be in not more than two sittings.
➨ Candidates must choose the correct JAMB subject combination for their desired bachelor’s degree programme/course.
➨ Candidates must also meet the stipulated Post UTME cut-off mark for their desired/chosen bachelor’s programme.

Master’s Programmes: To qualify for Master’s Degree Programmes, candidates must:
■ Possess a minimum of first Degree from a recognised academic institution.
■ Possess a Higher National Diploma from a recognised academic institution with a minimum of two years of working experience.

PhD Programmes: To qualify for PhD Programmes, candidates must:
■ Possess a Master’s Degree from a recognised University.

HOW TO APPLY
The Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria has set up an online portal to assist candidates seeking enrolment into its institution. Hence, the applicant should visit the website: https://ncat.gov.ng/portal/applicant/index to create an application profile, choose a course and follow all other relevant steps on the application process. NCAT’s cut-off mark for JAMB UTME is 180. The Application period into NCAT generally opens in the months of June and July.

Zaria, formerly known as Zazzau, is a major city in Kaduna State in northern Nigeria. It has a total population of 721,105 inhabitants. The region called Zazzau was founded in the year 1536 and later got renamed Zaria, after Queen Zaria. Zaria initially served as the capital of the Hausa kingdom until the British forces led by Frederick Lugard took over the city in 1901. After Nigeria’s independence Zaria. The city has a tropical climate, characterised by heavy rainfall and an average temperature of 25.2oC. Kaduna State, as a whole, is a multicultural and multi-ethnical state populated by about 59 to 63 different ethnic groups. The Kaduna State economy was the 15th largest state economy in Nigeria from 2002 to 2008, and Zaria’s economy is primarily based on agriculture.

Kaduna State has the highest number of tertiary institutions in Nigeria, and the city of Zaria is the educational centre of the northern states hosting universities such as Ahmadu Bello University and Nigerian College of Aviation Technology. The State provides over 1,000 healthcare centres that carter to the health needs of the population. The major transportation means in Zaria are motorcycles, taxis and buses. Zaria maintains an airport dubbed Zaria Airport that services flights within and out of the city. Some key attractions in Zaria city for exploration are the City Walls and the Emir of Zazzau’s Palace. The security levels in the State have been highly improved by the regular presence of security forces in the city. These facilities mentioned above may equally contribute to the wellbeing of the KASU students.

There are five (5) different scholarship schemes for applicants wishing to apply at KASU as follows:
