Some other popular universities in Bamenda include the University of Bamenda, the National Polytechnic Bambui, St. Jude’s Higher Insitute of Learning and the Cameroon Christian University.

Bamenda, also known as Abakwa and Mankon Town, is the capital of the Northwest Region of Cameroon. Bamenda is partitioned into two distinct sections. The first is the northern part, known as “Up Station” and the second is the low-lying and dominant south, with villages like Abakwa, Mankon, Nkwen, Chomba, Mbatu and Nsongwa. The city was colonised by Germany from 1884, till 1916.

After the First World War, Cameroon became a colony administered by Great Britain and France. In 1919, the administration of the Northwest Region and thus the city of Bamenda became solely British.

Bamenda features a tropical savanna climate characterised by raining and dry seasons. The city’s inhabitants are predominantly Grassfields peoples with a culture that consists of one hundred chiefdoms each ruled by a divine king (Fon).

Bamenda people are recognised by their accent, dialect, attire and cuisine. The city of Bamenda has an economy that depends mainly on agriculture, processing industries, tourism and transportation.

The cost of living in a city like Bamenda is relatively cheap – compared to other top cities like Yaoundé and Douala. Most restaurants are relatively inexpensive, with regular meals ranging from 500 to 1,500 FCFA.

The city has road links to Yaoundé, Bafoussam and Douala, which explains why it hosts numerous travelling agencies that work day and night transporting inhabitants within and out of the city.

It equally holds the Bamenda Airport, located in the Bafut subdivision that services flights in and out of the city. Notwithstanding, the primary transportation means in the town are bikes and taxis, with 250 FCFA as average cost.

The city of Bamenda provides a healthcare system that consists of biomedical treatment, traditional and Islamic medicines. These combinations are available to everyone and are considered based on belief, cost, proximity, and the advice of kin and neighbours.

Home teaching is a very vibrant sector for most university students seeking part-time employment in Bamenda. The city has several art centres where different groups produce pottery, textiles, and sculptures that are used as everyday household objects.

It hosts several NGO’s, especially those with a focus on social problems such as AIDS and ethnic development associations. Given the insecurity in the country in the past three years, stringent measures have been put in place to wane the insecurity and keep safe inhabitants.

These facilities serve the broader community and may be of great use to those wishing to study in CATUC.
