The National Institute of Transport (NIT) is a public higher learning institution located west of Dar-es-Salaam City, Tanzania. NIT was established in 1975 as a training wing of the then National Transport Corporation (NTC), under Act of Parliament, Number. 24 of 1982 – back when the complexity of the transport sector and the intricacies involved in its management necessitated the introduction of comprehensive training programmes for the development of the sectorial manpower. Currently, the Institute is under the Ministry of Transport, Works and Communication. It is fully accredited by the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) with Certificate of Registration Number REG./EOS/009 of 2002. The campus is located in Dar es Salaam.

The National Institute of Transport is one of the few training Institutes in Sub- Saharan Africa that offers specialised training programmes in Auto, Rail, Sea and Air transport. The Institute collaborates with the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) and International Purchasing and Supply Chain Management Consult (IPSCMC) to offer MBA in Logistics and Transport Management and Postgraduate Diploma in Procurement and Supply Chain Management respectively. Taking all this into consideration, the Institute aims to be a regional centre of excellence in logistics and transport technology.

The National Institute of Transport counts several facilities and services that enable it to carry out its activities. These include, alongside classrooms, a rich Library, a Cafeteria, a Health Centre, Halls of residence for a couple hundred students on-campus; recreational facilities like fields and playgrounds for football, basketball, and volleyball; among the facilities are also found a training workshop, computer laboratories and a Mosque. Dar es Salaam is the former capital and the most populous city of Tanzania. It served as the capital city of Tanzania from 1961 to 1973, having been the administrative and commercial centre of the region as far back as the 1900s. Dar es Salaam went through a tumultuous period of growth between 1973 and the late 1990s, before finally emerging in the 2000s as one of Africa’s leading cities. It experienced rapid urbanization rates as businesses opened and flourished, leading to growth in the construction sector. The city is divided into five administrative districts, all governed by municipal councils. Dar es Salaam experiences a tropical wet and dry climate, typified by hot and humid weather throughout the year. There are normally two rainy seasons in a year, from April to May and from November to December. Average temperatures range from 20.9 degrees Celsius to 30.7 degrees Celsius. The total population of Dar es Salaam is just over 6.5 million people. It is Tanzania’s most important city as far as business and government are concerned, although it is largely dependent on agriculture for employment. It is characterized by high concentrations of trade and manufacturing, compared to other parts of Tanzania. It is also home to the country’s only stock exchange.

In addition, it boasts a shopping mall, a large fish market, a Central Business District spread across several wards and even a natural harbour. Dar es Salaam is one of the hubs of the Tanzanian Transportation system, with several main railways and highways originating in or near the city, thereby providing convenient transportation for commuters. Tourism is a key attraction in Dar es Salaam, with the town boasting two museums, botanical gardens, and several beaches. The Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve is a popular spot for day trips from the city. The Udzungwa Mountains National Park offers breathtaking views and friendly local guides for bold and adventurous travellers. As the educational centre of Tanzania, Dar es Salaam is home to several higher education institutions like the University of Dar es Salaam, Kampala International University in Tanzania, Tanzania Institute of Accountancy, the Institute of Finance Management, Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology, College of Business Education, the National Institute of Transport and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences. The wealth of infrastructure and facilities could easily convince students to study in the City.
