Mulungushi University (MU) is a public university located in Kabwe, Zambia. Established in 2008, it is the third public university in Zambia after the University of Zambia and Copperbelt University. The university was formerly known as the National College of Management and Development Studies before the Zambian government turned it into a university in partnership with Konkola Copper Mines, a copper mining and smelting company in Zambia. The university is in a constant state of growth, and it counts 3 campuses – the Great North Road Campus on the banks of Mulungushi River; the Kabwe Town Campus located along Mubanga Road in the heart of Kabwe town, and the Livingstone Medical School located in Livingstone General Hospital.

Mulungushi University is the 3rd ranked university in Zambia, according to Webometrics’ ranking of African universities. The university seeks to provide high-quality academic programmes, research and consultancy services through stakeholder engagement. As a fairly new university then, MU combines third-stream activities and private-public partnerships in a bid to generate income. Apart from the initial partnership with the Konkola Copper Mines, the university also counts a partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States. Although well below initial estimates of 10000 students enrolled by 2018, the university counts over 6000 students, served by academic staff of over 460.

As part of its mandate to create a conducive academic environment for its university community, Mulungushi University offers several facilities and services that cater to student and staff alike. Under the Dean of Students Office, the Administrative Officer oversees the administration of Student Accommodation Services. Student Counsellors oversee Career and Guidance Services. The Sports and Recreation activities on campus are overseen by the Sports Officer as well. The University’s 3 campuses are well equipped to answer to the needs of the community. Chief among the facilities that serve the university is the Library department, with two libraries on two campuses. The Library runs a near-constant acquisition of new books to boost the library collection. Going back to its time as a college, the university library is a United Nations Repository, and also a World Bank Repository.

Kabwe is a city in Zambia. It is the capital of the Zambian Central Province. Kabwe was founded in 1902 when lead and zinc deposits were discovered in 1902. It was initially named Broken Hill after a similar mine in Broken Hill, Australia. It was the largest in the country for over 30 years until the larger copper mining complexes in Copperbelt were established. In 1921 a human fossil, since then dubbed “Rhodesian Man”, was found in the mine. The town was the seat of the Rhodesia Railway Workers Union prior to independence, and in 1958 it was the site of a rally held at Mulungushi Rock by the future UNIP party that would spearhead the independence of Zambia, reason why the site is known as the birthplace of Zambian independence. The climate of Kabwe alternates between a muggy and overcast wet season and a windy and warm dry season. Yearly average temperatures go from 14.7 degrees Celsius to 27.0 degrees Celsius. The total population of Kabwe is just over 200000.

Kabwe is an important transportation centre. It is home to one of the first hydroelectric power stations in Africa, on the Mulungushi River. It is the headquarters of Zambia Railways. Although the closure of the mine led to economic decline in the city, it has a number of industries in the manufacturing sector, including the Zambia-China Mulungushi Textiles plant established with Chinese investment in the 1980s. Other sectors include pharmaceuticals, milling and cotton ginning, a drinking water plant, and leather tanning. The city has considerable touristic potential, both due to the city’s central location and proximity to Lusaka, as well the Lukanga Swamp with a wildlife area, the Mulungushi River and Lunsemfwa River valleys, and the Chifunkunya Hills. The Mulungushi Rock of Authority, north of the city, is a prime attraction. The city is host to the Mulungushi University, and a host of other higher education institutions, providing students with a myriad of opportunities for higher education.
