Yola is the capital city and administrative centre of Adamawa State, Nigeria. The name Yola stands for ‘Great Plain’ or ‘Vast Plain Land’. The city was founded in 1841 by Chief Modibbo Adama, across the hillside of the North-Eastern region of Nigeria. Modibbo Adama was recognised as a learned Muslim who could lead the people in the Upper Benue area during the Islamic movement led by Shehu Usman Dan Fodio of the 19th Century. It formerly served as the capital of a Fulani state until it was taken over by the British in 1901. After Nigeria’s independence, Yola got designated the capital of Adamawa State, which was formed in 1991. Yola city features a tropical climate with an average annual temperature is 28.0 °C. The Yola people have unique customs that originate in the old Duchy of Normandy. These included mumming, patrons, and the tradition of placing funeral crosses on roadway trees, which continues till this day. Yola’s economy is highly dependent on agriculture and trade.

The state is home to several private and public institutions of learning namely; the Adamawa State Polytechnic, the American University of Nigeria, Modibbo Adama University of Technology Yola (MAUTECH) and the Federal Government Girls College, Yola among others.
