Midlands State University is a public university in Gweru, Zimbabwe. The idea of a Midlands university is related to the missed opportunity that the Midlands province experienced when it lost the bid to be the site for a second university campus of the National University of Science and Technology.

It was in the midst of such disappointments that two initiatives gradually converged to give birth to what has since become the Midlands State University. After pressure from the provincial political leadership, President Mugabe acceded to the idea of a national university being built in the Midlands and announced that at two provincial rallies held at Gokwe and Matanga growth points.

The President’s declarations coincided with the Ministry of Higher Education and Technology’s policy of devolution, which was aimed at expanding access to higher education by converting teachers’ and technical colleges into degree-granting institutions.

Through this process, the Gweru Teacher’s College started enrolling students to commerce programmes in 1998. Midlands State University was later established as Zimbabwe’s fourth state university and enrolled its first intake of students in March 2000. The University counts 4 campuses in Gweru, Zvishane and Harare.

Midlands State University is ranked 2nd in Zimbabwe according to Webometrics’ ranking of African Universities. It also regularly features among the top 3 universities in Zimbabwe based on rankings from Times Higher Education and QS University Rankings.

The university equally fosters sustainable socio-economic transformation through the promotion of managerial skills, generation, dissemination and application of knowledge, the use of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs), and the virtual classroom as principal teaching and training modes of delivery and research.

In 2015, MSU was awarded the International Gold Star for Quality in by the Business Initiative Directions, in recognition of its outstanding commitment to quality and excellence. In July 2017, MSU Boost-Enactus team were crowned national champions thereby qualifying for the ENACTUS World Cup competition.

Its Moot team won the UNHRC Moot Court Competition in 2018. The university as well received the Enterprise Innovation Award in March 2018, at the Business Leadership and Enterprise Competitiveness Summit.

MSU received a €140,000 grant by a London-based institution, Royal Academy of Engineering to support engineering research and teaching activities in 2019. The University enrols over 31000 students and more than 2000 staff.

Midlands State University counts several facilities and services that contribute to a conducive academic environment for its university community. It offers high-quality sporting facilities with a gym and various fields for football, and courts for Basketball, Tennis and Volleyball.

There are equally conference halls with all the necessary amenities, halls of residence to cope with the ever-increasing number of undergraduates, and more halls of residence are being constructed at the secondary campuses.

In addition to lecture rooms across all campuses, the university also counts a Chapel, a Multi-purpose Hall, catering services and computer resource centres in two of its campuses. The university library boasts a well-stocked catalogue and e-resources for electronic books and journals.

Some notable alumni are Divine Ndhlukula – CEO of SECURICO, Never Ncube – CEO of Dandemutande Investments, Thompson Maeresera – CEO of Mberengwa RDC, Marvellous Nyongoro – CEO of The Housing Hub

Gweru is a city in central Zimbabwe, located in the centre of the country. It is the capital of the Midlands province. The original Matabele settlement was named iKwelo (“The Steep Place”), after the river’s high banks. The modern town, founded in 1894 as a military outpost, developed as an agricultural centre and became a municipality in 1914. The total population of the city is just over 150000. Annual average temperatures vary between 11.0 and 24.9 degrees Celsius. Gweru is a busy trade centre with some industrial development. Its products include ferrochromium, textiles, dairy foods, footwear, and building materials. The surrounding area supports a number of mines, boasting rich deposits of gold, chrome, iron, asbestos, and limestone. The city is equally known for vibrant farming activities in beef cattle, crop farming, and commercial gardening of crops for the export market.

One of the city’s most famous landmarks is the Boogie Clock Tower, built in 1928 in memory of Major Williams James Boggie. Found in the vicinity of the city are the Nalatale and Danangombe archaeological sites, known for patterned brickwork and Portuguese remains respectively. Top attractions in the city, natural and man-made, include Antelope Park, St. Theresa Cathedral, Mutorashanga Quarry, and the Gweru Military Aircraft Museum. The National Railways of Zimbabwe has the country’s largest marshalling yard, Dabuka, on the south side of Gweru. Dabuka plays a pivotal role in rail movement in the country as it is the central hub of the rail links to Mozambique in the east, South Africa in the south and Botswana and Namibia in the South West. Gweru is home to several primary, secondary and tertiary institutions – the Midlands State University is found in the city. The presence of these institutions could motivate students to study in the city.
