Mekelle University (MU) is a public university located in Mekelle, Tigray Region, Ethiopia. MU was established in 1991. Mekelle University’s establishment came about with the merging of two former colleges, Mekelle Business College and Mekelle University College in May 2000 by the Government of Ethiopia as an autonomous higher education institution.
Mekelle Business College was first established as a school of Economics in 1987 by the Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) in one of the then liberated areas of Tigray- Dejena (in Western Tigray) with its main aim to train middle-level experts who could assume the financial and administrative responsibilities of the public in the then liberated areas during the armed struggle.
Mekelle University College was incepted in 1993 as the Arid Zone Agricultural College which had been recited in Mekelle after a series of relocations. Although the management of the two colleges was officially independent, initiatives were taken by both institutions to work closely, with a vision of creating a full-fledged University.
Having a common Board of Governors played a significant role in the establishment of Mekelle University and then to achieve rapid growth after its official inauguration in May 2000.

MU houses five campuses in the city of Mekelle namely; Endayesus (main) Campus, Adi Haqi Campus, Ayder Campus, Aynalem Campus, Quha Campus and Kalamino Campus with two more under construction.
The university counts over 31,733 students held by over 1800 staff. It aims at pursuing excellence in academics, research and community services and contributing to the advancement of knowledge, economic growth and social welfare to the national and international community.
MU holds as values, Excellence in service delivery, Dynamism, Academic freedom, Good governance, and Sensitivity to cross-cutting issues.

Mekelle University is ranked 2nd best university in Ethiopia according to webometrics. In April 2012, MU was awarded by the Ethiopian Quality Award organization for its excellence in quality under the non-profit service providers category.  In 2016, Mekelle University’s team won a national award for best researchers and innovators.
In 2019, Mekelle University emerged winners in the Ethiopian HUAWEI ICT competition, grabbing the awards for best instructor and best university. Mekelle University has several academic and non-academics facilities which the students and staff use to ease their way around the campuses.
These facilities include a library, housing, sports facilities, lecture halls and administrative services.
