It was the first administrative centre for the British colony, but when it was bypassed by the Uganda Railway the capital moved to Nairobi – it is technically the oldest administrative municipality in East and Central Africa.

The population of the town is just over 150000. The climate is mild and generally warm and temperate. The summers here have a good deal of rainfall, while the winters have very little. Annual average temperatures hover at around 19.0 degrees Celsius.

Machakos is home to several open-air markets that sell many products, with major market days being on Mondays and Fridays. The Mavoko area of Machakos houses a major nation’s cement mining sites and factories. It also has a number of major banks, as well as larger administrative offices in lower Ukambani.

The town has good road infrastructure and town planning, and its bus terminal welcomes a good number of buses and matatus daily. Ngei Road is one of the busiest areas in Machakos. The town equally has hilly scenery good for camping and hiking, and it is the hometown of some of the world’s most beautiful sculptures.

The Machakos Peoples’ Park is a modern recreation park situated adjacent to the Maruba dam, the town’s main source of water. The town is equally home to Machakos University, as well as several primary and secondary schools. It acts as a possible hub of education, offering prospective students the option to study in the area.
