Following changes in Government policy to liberalize the economy and provision of social services, rekindled the desire for higher education within the circles of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) decided to establish a Lutheran university, “Tumaini University,” comprising, among others, The Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College. The Medical College became operational on 1st October 1997 under the name of Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College KCM College. The College adopted the new name of Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College in 2010. The campus is located in Moshi.

Although it is a young institution, KCMUCo has been working hard to address the unmet health care needs of Africa, increasing the number of health workers and retaining them in Tanzania. Through the support of the Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI), the school is focusing on scaling up training, with a noted increase in the number of graduates annually. KCMUCo has also updated its programs of study to ensure that medical students are acquiring relevant competencies to provide care for rural and underserved populations. The University College counts over a thousand students.

Accommodation in some of the allied schools’ hostels is extended to KCMU-College students. Some of these hostels have cooking facilities. Additional lodging facilities preferred by students are offered by neighbouring rent houses within two to three kilometres of the college campus. The library provides facilities for research. It has 20,000 volumes and about 40 periodicals and journals and a medical illustration unit. The main library staff give expert advice on how to manage them. The Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre is the main teaching hospital for the KCMUCo. It provides and promotes a very conducive environment for teaching and learning, as well as running outreach and community services.

Moshi is a town located in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. It doubles as the capital of the region. It served as the location of a German military camp in 1893, and it received the northern line railroad in 1912. It attained “Town” status in 1956, and it became a municipality in 1988. The population of Moshi is estimated at over 200000 following a 2017 census. The town has a wet tropical climate, with light or insignificant rainfall year-round. Annual average temperatures go from 17 degrees Celsius to 29 degrees Celsius. Moshi is an economically viable town, with heavy reliance on manufacturing, tourism, and trade. It is home to one of only three Coca-Cola bottlers in Tanzania, and in the southern part of the city lies one of the oldest sugar cane plantations in the country. the Kilimanjaro Native Co-operative Union, founded in 1929, collects coffee from 96 village societies, representing over 150,000 small-scale farmers. KNCU handles between 50 and 70% of the coffee grown in the area and trades over 5,250 tons of Arabica coffee, which is about 11% of national production.

Moshi is a tourism centre in the northern part of Tanzania. Landmarks and sites like Kilimanjaro National Park, Mkomazi National Park, Lake Jipe, and Lake Chala attract many tourists. There are also several waterfalls, natural springs, and tropical forests. Tours from Moshi to other areas such as the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Arusha National park are a common fixture. The town also hosts an annual international tourism and industry fair, which is designed to enhance business networking. Moshi is home to the Kilimanjaro Clinical Research Institute. The Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre is found in the area, and it serves as a referral hospital and teaching hospital for the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College, which is one of a few higher education institutions found in the town, along with the Stefano Moshi Memorial University College and the Moshi Co-operative University. As a haven of medical care, Moshi could attract students considering an education in the medical field.
