Kampala International University in Tanzania (KIUT) is a private university located in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It was established in 2008 as the Dar es Salaam Constituent College of the Kampala International University, primarily to run the Open Distance Learning programmes of KIU. Following an increase in student enrolment in 2010, forced the college leadership to search for a new permanent location that would facilitate the offer of university education through both ODL and residential modes of course delivery. It was granted a Certificate of Provisional Registration in 2011, and later a Certificate of Full Registration in 2012. By 2017 the former constituent college had graduated to full-fledged university status, under the name of Kampala International University. The university campus is located in Gongo la Mboto, in the Ilala District of Dar Es Salaam.

Kampala International University in Tanzania is ranked 43rd in Tanzania, according to Webometrics’ ranking of African universities. The university aims to become an institution of national repute, preparing students to respond to the needs of society. To that effect the university constantly seeks partnerships with other institutions to enhance mutually beneficial objectives. The university recently survived an admission ban that lasted for two consecutive academic years – although it has been able to bounce back, KIUT will not be operating at full capacity for a while due to the absence of students in the second and third years.

Kampala International University in Tanzania counts facilities and services that contribute to a conducive academic environment for the university community. In order to improve service delivery, the university has improved its ICT facilities, it is connected to fibre optic, and it has dedicated student free Wi-Fi hotspots. This is in addition to the general restructuring that the university underwent. KIUT also offers on- and off-campus Hostels for its students. The university equally provides counselling services for its students in light of how challenging university life can get. The university also counts a Teaching Hospital at the service of its Faculty of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Dar es Salaam is the former capital and the most populous city of Tanzania. It served as the capital city of Tanzania from 1961 to 1973, having been the administrative and commercial centre of the region as far back as the 1900s. Dar es Salaam went through a tumultuous period of growth between 1973 and the late 1990s, before finally emerging in the 2000s as one of Africa’s leading cities. It experienced rapid urbanization rates as businesses opened and flourished, leading to growth in the construction sector. The city is divided into five administrative districts, all governed by municipal councils. Dar es Salaam experiences a tropical wet and dry climate, typified by hot and humid weather throughout the year. There are normally two rainy seasons in a year, from April to May and from November to December. Average temperatures range from 20.9 degrees Celsius to 30.7 degrees Celsius. The total population of Dar es Salaam is just over 6.5 million people. It is Tanzania’s most important city as far as business and government are concerned, although it is largely dependent on agriculture for employment. It is characterized by high concentrations of trade and manufacturing, compared to other parts of Tanzania. It is also home to the country’s only stock exchange.

In addition, it boasts a shopping mall, a large fish market, a Central Business District spread across several wards and even a natural harbour. Dar es Salaam is one of the hubs of the Tanzanian Transportation system, with several main railways and highways originating in or near the city, thereby providing convenient transportation for commuters. Tourism is a key attraction in Dar es Salaam, with the town boasting two museums, botanical gardens, and several beaches. The Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve is a popular spot for day trips from the city. The Udzungwa Mountains National Park offers breathtaking views and friendly local guides for bold and adventurous travellers. As the educational centre of Tanzania, Dar es Salaam is home to several higher education institutions like the University of Dar es Salaam, Kampala International University in Tanzania, Tanzania Institute of Accountancy, the Institute of Finance Management, Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology, College of Business Education, the National Institute of Transport and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences. The wealth of infrastructure and facilities could easily convince students to study in the City.
