In the last five years the university has won several national and international awards of excellence, and thanks to a significant improvement in its reputation, it has been able to attract staff and students from many countries. The university exists to serve the higher education needs of the English-speaking Muslim community in southern and eastern Africa, but it also enrols non-Muslim students who are free to practise their religions. The university counts over 8000 students, as well as 900 staff members.

Notable alumni from the university include Beatrice Atim Anywar (Member of Parliament), Julius Wandera Maganda (Minister for East African Affairs), Faridah Nakazibwe (Journalist), Lukia Isanga Nakadama (Minister for Gender and Culture).

Mbale is a town located in the Eastern Region of Uganda. It serves as the municipal, administrative and commercial centre of Mbale District. Mbale is located approximately 225 kilometres northeast of Kampala, the capital of Uganda. The estimated population of the town is just over 95000. Average annual temperatures go from 15 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius. From its location in a fertile coffee-growing region, Mbale is an agricultural trade centre and the site of one of Uganda’s primary dairies. in November 2019 the Cabinet of Uganda resolved to award Mbale city status, effective July 2020.

The town is host to several points of interest, like the Mbale Central Market and the Mbale Municipal Stadium. Military facilities like the headquarters of the 3rd Division of the Uganda People’s Defense force can equally be found in the town. As far as health facilities go, the Mbale Regional Referral Hospital and the CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda are found in the town –the former is a public hospital administered by the Ministry of Health, and the latter is a private neurosurgery hospital owned and administered by CURE International.

Mbale is equally home to several educational institutions, like Livingstone International University, the Mbale Campus of Uganda Martyrs University and the main campus of the Islamic University in Uganda. The town’s growth into a city could very well convince students to study in the higher institutions available in Mbale.
