The establishment of the university in Tanzania was as a result of the request of Late Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere, the first President of the country. Its creation symbolizes the long-standing partnership between Tanzania and India as part of the implementation of the South-South cooperation.
IMTU was inaugurated in September 1997, by Shri. I.K. Gujral, the then Honorable Prime Minister of India, and it started by establishing the College of Medicine. A Memorandum of Understanding was later established between VEF, Bangalore and the Government of Tanzania, which led to the recognition of the university by the government through the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU).

IMTU has one campus found in Mbezi Beach. The famous faculty in the university is the Faculty of Medicine as it is the first faculty to be established when the university was inaugurated and has two undergraduate and six postgraduate programmes.
IMTU has a mission to provide quality education, research and service for the advancement of health and economic prosperity of Tanzanians and people across the world. It also holds firm to its values which are excellence, accountability, transparency, moral standards, integrity, innovation, partnership, and equity.

IMTU has a service-oriented hospital (IMTU hospital) with a capacity of 50 beds and requirements for both inpatient and outpatient care, which also serves as a teaching hospital of the university.
The university library has a collection of more than 5000 volume of books and about 200 titles of periodicals and maintains a computerized catalogue. None the less, IMTU provides a well-equipped computer laboratory, with full-time internet access.

Dar es Salaam is the former capital and the most populous city of Tanzania. It served as the capital city of Tanzania from 1961 to 1973, having been the administrative and commercial centre of the region as far back as the 1900s.
Dar es Salaam went through a tumultuous period of growth between 1973 and the late 1990s, before finally emerging in the 2000s as one of Africa’s leading cities. It experienced rapid urbanization rates as businesses opened and flourished, leading to growth in the construction sector.
Dar es Salaam experiences a tropical wet and dry climate, typified by hot and humid weather throughout the year.  Average temperatures range from 20.9 degrees Celsius to 30.7 degrees Celsius. The total population of Dar es Salaam is just over 6.5 million people.
It is Tanzania’s most important city as far as business and government are concerned, although it is largely dependent on agriculture for employment. It is characterized by high concentrations of trade and manufacturing, compared to other parts of Tanzania.

Tourism is a key attraction in Dar es Salaam, with the town boasting two museums, botanical gardens, and several beaches. The Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve is a popular spot for day trips from the city.  The Udzungwa Mountains National Park offers breathtaking views and friendly local guides for bold and adventurous travellers.
It is also home to the country’s only stock exchange. In addition, it boasts a shopping mall, a large fish market, a Central Business District spread across several wards and even a natural harbour.
