Imo State University, also known as IMSU, is an accredited state university located in Owerri, Imo State, southeastern Nigeria. It got established in the year 1981 as a fully functional university by the late Chief Mbakwe’s administration. The University moved to its permanent site at Uturu Okigwe in 1986. This happened after the creation of Abia State from the Old Imo State in 1992 that made Uturu part of Abia State. It currently operates a single campus that is located at Owerri.

The Imo State University was once ranked 1st among all State Universities, and 10th overall, among both State and Federal Universities. Some of its renowned activities include the Sandwich Programme, its Institute for Continuing Education Programme (ICEP) and its Outreach & Consultancy Services (OCS). One of its recent initiatives is the building separate hostels for males and females to prevent male and female students from living together in the same hostels. The university started with a total of 392 pioneer students, which has accrued to over 20,000 in recent years.

Imo State University considers its environment and tempo as key components to effective learning. To this effect, Imo State University provides a host of facilities such as; laboratories, lecture halls, libraries and recreational centres.  Hence, students at Imo State University are encouraged to utilize the full range of academic resources at their disposal.  The learning-teaching process at Imo State University has over the years yielded enormous fruits in the form of notable alumni in likes of Chukwuemeka Ngozichineke Wogu (Minister of Labour and Productivity) and Barr. Chris Okewulonu (Chief of Staff to the Imo State government) in Nigeria.

Imo State University accepts applications from local and international students for its Bachelors, Masters and PhD level programmes.

Bachelor’s Programmes: The two main ways to get admission into ISMU are either through “JAMB UTME Exam” or “Direct Entry”.

  Admission Requirements for Direct Entry Candidates:
➤ Candidates should have one of the following qualifications; Cambridge A’Level, GCE A’Level, HND, ND, NCE, IJMB, JUPEB.
➤ You will need to be at least 16 years of age.
➤ Possess five O’Level credit passes (WAEC/WASSCE, NECO, GCE or NABTEB) including English language and Mathematics. It must be in not more than two sittings.
➤ Direct entry candidates do not need to write JAMB UTME. They just need to acquire and fill the JAMB Direct Entry Form.
*After a satisfactory admission screening or entrance test/interview, you will be directly admitted to the 200 Level (second year) course of your choice.

  Admission Requirements for JAMB UTME Candidates:
➨ Candidates seeking admission into 100 Level (first year) are required to write the JAMB UTME exam and score at least 180.
*Those who chose ISMU as their first choice and scored 180 & above in the JAMB UTME will then write ISMU’s Post UTME exam.
*Successful candidates will be given admission after consideration of their score at both the JAMB UTME and ISMU’s Post UTME exam.
➨ You will need to be at least 16 years of age.
➨ Possess five O’Level credit passes (WAEC/WASSCE, NECO, GCE or NABTEB) in 3 relevant subjects plus English language and Mathematics. It must be in not more than two sittings.
➨ Candidates must choose the correct JAMB subject combination for their desired bachelor’s degree programme/course.
➨ Candidates must also meet the stipulated Post UTME cut-off mark for their desired/chosen bachelor’s programme.

Master’s Programmes: To qualify for Master’s Degree Programmes, candidates must:
■ Possess a Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 5-point scale or a minimum GPA of 2.4 on a 4-point scale or a minimum of 60% on a 100% scale.
■ Possess a minimum of five years of postgraduate working experience.
■ Take a screening test on a date to be fixed.

PhD Programmes: To qualify for PhD Programmes, candidates must:
■ Possess a Master’s degree in the relevant discipline with at least 3.5 GPA on a 5-point scale, 3.00 on a 4 point scale or a 70% on 100%
■ Take a screening test on a date to be fixed.

HOW TO APPLY
Imo State University has set up an online portal to assist candidates seeking enrolment into its institution. Hence, the applicant should visit the website: www.imsu.edu.ng. This platform was set up to ease the application process for prospective applicants and all they need to do is follow its directives. ISMU’s cut off mark is 180 for Jamb UTME score. For first-year students, the application period into Imo State University generally takes place in the month of July.

Owerri is the capital of Imo State in Nigeria. It is also the state’s largest city, located in the heart of Igboland. The area is known as Owerri, Imo State, today was originally part of the defunct East Central State. It was one of the twelve states initially created in 1967 by General Yakubu Gowon’s regime. Owerri was the last of three capitals of the Republic of Biafra in 1969. Owerri contains some statuaries memorialising the Biafra war, particularly in locations that suffered heavy bombing.
Owerri has a tropical wet climate, characterised by heavy rainfall and a brief dry season. The city’s average annual temperature is 26.4 °C. The city is culturally homogeneous as it is a predominantly Igbo speaking city.  Owerri, Imo state has a very rich cultural heritage, manifested in dressing, music, dance, festivals, arts and crafts, and the traditional hospitality of the people. Owerri is endowed with natural resources such as crude oils, lead, zinc, clay, limestone and natural gas. The state’s economy depends mainly on agriculture and commerce.

Owerri is a city with several facilities that enables its inhabitants and students to have a reasonable balance between studying and socialising. The city has the Imo Wonderlake Resort, the second-largest freshwater lake in Nigeria; surrounded by evergreen environs of poetic beauty.
The Mbari Cultural & Art Centre, Owerri is an open-air museum that houses monumental arts depicting peace, prosperity and social life in Igbo land. The Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport services flights in and out of the city. The Eze Silver Ibenyi Ugbala II Palace is a traditional court palace with mysteries, historical and archaeological discoveries. An excellent site for camping and picnicking open to everyone is also available in this city known as the Rolling Hills, Okigwe.
Ada palm in Owerri is the biggest and most viable oil palm plantation in West Africa. The city has the Assumpta Cathedral reputed to be the biggest Catholic Church in West Africa, fashioned in Italian architectural design. The Nekede Zoo is a biological garden complex found in Owerri, open to the public for visitation.

There is also another university in Owerri-Imo State called ‘Federal University of Technology Owerri‘.

Scholarships

The government of Imo state provides A-Level, O-level and Undergraduate scholarship
Opportunities. To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must:
  1) Be Imo State indigene
 2) Have five credit in WASC/GCE/SSCE including Maths, English, and 3 other relevant subjects obtained in one sitting.

For undergraduate scholarships, applicants must be full-time degree students of the under-listed institutions in Imo State: Imo State University, Federal University of Technology Owerri, Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Eastern Palm University, Imo State Polytechnic, Alvan Ikoku College.
