IIE Monash South Africa (IIE MSA) is a higher education institution located in Johannesburg, South Africa. As of 2019 It is the newest acquisition of the Independent Institute of Education, a private higher education institution in South Africa and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of investment holding company ADvTECH Group Limited. The IIE confers a range of tertiary qualifications, through various faculties, via a number of academic institutions in South Africa, including Vega, Varsity College, Rosebank College and The Business School at Varsity College. IIE MSA is the latest such acquisition. Prior to that, from 2001 to 2019, it was the South African campus of Monash University in Australia. Today IIE MSA is found in Ruimsig, Johannesburg.

IIE Monash South Africa (IIE MSA), as one of the academic institutions under the purview of the Independent Institute of Education, focuses on Social Science, Business, Information Technology and Public Health. Research at the institution aligns with the research agendas of South Africa and the African continent – water research, in particular, has greatly impacted regional and national policy and awareness on the importance of clean, potable water for all South Africans. In addition, students are prepared for leadership roles in an ever-changing environment. At the height of its time as a campus under Monash University, IIE MSA counted over 4000 students, making it largest private higher education institution in South Africa.

IIE Monash South Africa (IIE MSA) has several facilities and services that enhance a conducive academic environment. The state-of-the-art campus is complete with student accommodation, computer labs, restaurants and sports facilities, including a gym. From free Wi-Fi access to a well-equipped library and high-tech lecture theatres, the campus respects international standards. Its establishment has led to significant development in the local area, with several shopping centres, sporting and leisure facilities opening since 2001. The local area also contains substantial accommodation for those students who do not live on-campus.

Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa, and one of the largest urban areas in the world. It is South Africa’s chief industrial and financial metropolis. Johannesburg, or Jozi or Jo’Burg, as it is sometimes called, was founded in 1886, after gold was discovered on a farm in the area. Initially part of the independent Afrikaner republic, the Transvaal, it is today the provincial capital of Gauteng, the wealthiest of South Africa’s nine provinces. Johannesburg is situated on the Highveld, the broad plateau that sweeps across the South African interior. It grew on the edge of the Witwatersrand Main Reef – a subterranean gold-bearing deposit that goes for hundreds of miles beneath the Highveld. Johannesburg has a temperate climate, enjoying about eight hours of sunlight per day in both winter and summer. Average summer temperatures are about 24 degrees Celsius, and average winter temperatures are about 13 degrees Celsius. The city can be prone to droughts, as average rainfall per year is quite low at 700 millimetres. Johannesburg has an urban population of over 5.7 million, and it is a genuine racial and linguistic melting pot, counting blacks, whites, coloureds and Asians among its population. There are over 10 languages spoken on a regular basis in Johannesburg. It is the commercial and financial heart of South Africa, being a centre of mining, manufacturing and finance. It produces 16% of South Africa’s GDP. All the mining houses, as well as the Chamber of Mines, are headquartered in the city. Practically all the banks, insurance companies and building societies in South Africa have their head offices in the city. The Johannesburg Stock Exchange lists more than 600 companies. The city equally boasts a rich, multi-faceted cultural life.

Although the city is not a standard touristic destination, it nonetheless serves as a connecting point to major touristic destinations in South Africa. Visits to the Apartheid Museum, as well as former townships, generate a lot of interest. The city is also fitted with an observation deck located at Carlton Centre in the Central Business District. There are several malls in Johannesburg, as well as theme parks and amusement parks. As far as landmarks go, the Cradle of Humankind is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The Lesedi Cultural Village is another popular attraction. Johannesburg offers various wildlife viewing options, with the Johannesburg Zoo being one of the largest in the country. The Lion Park nature serve houses over 80 lions, and 1500 hectares Krugersdorp Nature Reserve is a forty-minute drive from the city centre Johannesburg is served principally by the OR Tumbo International Airport for both domestic and international flights. It shares a network of Metropolitan routes with Krugersdorp and Ekurhuleni. The Metrorail Gauteng commuter rail system connects central Johannesburg to Soweto, Pretoria and most of the satellite towns along the Witwatersrand. Johannesburg has a well-developed higher education system of both private and public universities, as well as several private colleges. It is also home to an award-winning film school. The city is home to higher education institutions like the University of Witwatersrand, Monash South Africa, and the University of Johannesburg. As an alpha global city, Johannesburg offers a wealth of experience that could prove useful to students willing to further their education in a metropolis.

As one of the youngest world major cities, Johannesburg has nonetheless experienced a vast amount of change. While it is the beating heart of South Africa, it has overcome over 20 years of decay and decline to become the rapidly changing, ever-evolving city it now is. The city centre is currently smarting up, with loft apartments and office developments being erected at a steady pace. Maboneng is considered one of the most successful urban-renewal projects in the world. The cost of living in the city is just over 8000 rands for a single person per month, without rent. As a town that welcomes students from across the world, this could prove relevant to decision-making. Johannesburg’s hipster-friendly appeal cannot be understated – it is a prominent area for many creative and cultural industries, and is home to the National School of Arts, The University of Witwatersrand’s School of the Arts and the South African Ballet Theatre, as well as the Johannesburg Art Gallery and other prominent cultural landmarks, such as the Mary Fitzgerald Square and numerous other museums, theatres, galleries and libraries.
