Harare is the capital and most populous city of Zimbabwe. The city was founded in 1890 as Salisbury, by the Pioneer Column, a military volunteer force of settlers organised by Cecil Rhodes. It was named for Lord Salisbury, then British prime minister. The name Harare is derived from that of the outcast Chief Neharawe, who, with his people, occupied the at the time the Pioneer Column arrived and seized the land.

The city was created as a municipality in 1897 and developed after the arrival of the railway from the port of Beira in Mozambique, becoming a market and mining centre. It was chartered as a city in 1935. It served as the capital of the self-governing British colony of Southern Rhodesia from 1923, and of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland from 1953 to 1963.

Ian Smith’s Rhodesian Front government declared Rhodesia independent from the United Kingdom in 1965 and proclaimed the Republic of Rhodesia in 1970. It was not until 18 April 1980 that the country was internationally recognised as independent as the Republic of Zimbabwe. The name was changed to Harare in 1982 to celebrate the second anniversary of independence.

The total population of Harare is just over 1.5 million – it is worth noting that industrialization during and after World War II led to an influx in population. The climate in Harare is a subtropical highland climate, and average annual temperatures go from 12.3 degrees Celsius to 25.5 degrees Celsius.

Harare is the centre of Zimbabwe’s industry and commerce, and also the focal point for the distribution of agricultural produce from the surrounding area, particularly tobacco. There are equally important gold mines not far from the city.

The city is modern and well-planned, with multi-storied buildings and tree-lined avenues. It is the site of Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedrals, a Dutch Reformed church, the Queen Victoria Memorial Library and Museum, the National Archives and the Rhodes National Gallery. It is a hub of rail, road, and air transport – the nearby airport at Kentucky handles international traffic.

The city offers several sights for curious tourists like the Chiremba Balancing Rocks, the Surrey Pies, and the Bushman Rock Safaris – part winery, part game reserve, part polo field and part boutique lodge. It is one of the last remaining vineyards in what was once Zimbabwe’s primary wine-growing region.

The National Heroes’ Acre is one of the monuments that merit a visit – designed with the assistance of North Korea, it serves as a sombre memorial to the forces who died during the Second Chimurenga. The city is home to several colleges and universities, and particularly the University of Zimbabwe, the country’s oldest university. This could encourage students thinking of pursuing their education in the city.
