Gulu University is a public tertiary institution located in Gulu, Uganda. It was founded in 2002 following a presidential decree. It was formerly known as the Gulu University of Agriculture and Environmental Science and was to specialize in agricultural mechanization. GU was later proposed to widen its scope, so it then increased its intake and now has six faculties and two institutions.

In 2009, GU established a constituent college in the town of Lira, named Lira University College. It continued operating in this capacity until it was elevated to an independent public university following an Act of Parliament. GU currently has three campuses; its main campus found in Gulu, another in Kitgum town and a third campus in the city of Hoima.

Gulu University is ranked 5th in Uganda, according to Webometrics’ ranking of African universities. GU’s vision is to be a pillar for professional, academic and sustainable development. The institution strives to provide access to professional training, higher education and research while aiming to use these skills for community development and biodiversity conservation.

Gulu University values professionalism, integrity, effectiveness and efficiency, teamwork, transparency, and gender responsiveness.

Gulu University counts a number of facilities and services that cater to the needs of the university community, such as clubs, a sports unit, a library, hostels and disability services. It is however generally observed that Gulu University facilities are unfit to hold the ever-growing university, as the current facilities were built to contain the Gulu Farm institute.

Notable alumni from the university include Joyce Moriku (Minister of State for Primary Health Care), Hellen Kahunde (Member of Parliament), Betty Aoi Ochan(Opposition Leader), Moses Adome (Member of Parliament)

Gulu is a city in the Northern Region of Uganda, and it serves as the commercial and administrative centre of Gulu District. Gulu has a tropical wet and dry climate which is characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons which are almost of the same duration. Rainfall is predominant during the wet season and very little during the dry season. Average annual temperatures go from 16.8 to 29.3 degrees.

Gulu was once home to over 2 million people who settled as internally displaced persons fleeing the threats of the Lord’s Resistance Army, a rebel group. These IDPs have long returned to their villages, leaving the Gulu population at above 160,000.

Gulu is situated approximately 340 kilometres from Kampala, the largest city in Uganda. This relative proximity to the nation’s capital has contributed to Gulu’s economy. Students will find it easy to commute around Gulu and to neighbouring cities. Apart from roads, the city has a railway line and an airport. Its airport is the second biggest in the country.

It is home to the Pece War Memorial Stadium which has a capacity of 3000 people. Gulu is served by three hospitals.  Students, no matter their religious beliefs, will have a place to worship. This includes, but is not limited to, temples, churches, and mosques. Gulu is the home of Gulu University, one of the three public universities in the Northern Region, and the parent institution of Gulu University School of Medicine.
