Lusaka is the capital city of Zambia. It is also the largest city in the country. It is located in the southern part of the country. Lusaka has a population of about 1.7 million. The city was the site of a village that stood near the current location of the Zambian National Assembly and bore the name of its Chief Lusaka.

In the 1890s the area was taken over by the British South Africa Company as part of the formation of Northern Rhodesia. Control was handed over to the British Colonial Office in 1924, and in 1935 Lusaka became the capital of Northern Rhodesia, replacing Livingstone.

In the years preceding the creation of the Republic of Zambia, Lusaka was a bastion of the independence movement; it was the location of the formation of the Northern Rhodesian Congress in 1948, and the centre of the civil disobedience movement of 1960 that led to the creation Zambia, with the city becoming its capital.

Since then the city has grown to become the commercial and administrative centre of Zambia. English is the official language of the city, but Chewa and Bemba are commonly spoken on the streets. The city is home to a diverse foreign community, many of whom work as diplomats, representatives of religious organisations and business people.

Lusaka has a humid subtropical climate – it experiences five distinct seasons that vary between high humidity and heavy rainfalls, cold nights and sunny weather, and an increase in temperatures. Average annual temperatures go vary between 27.5 degrees Celsius and 13.7 degrees Celsius.

The city is reliant on its agricultural environs and corn and tobacco collection, but it is also cement, textile, shoe manufacturing, and food processing hub.

Lusaka boasts several cultural attractions and museums like the Lusaka National Museum, the Political Museum, the Zintu Community Museum, the Freedom Statue, the Zambian National Assembly and the Agricultural Society Showgrounds that host an annual agricultural show.

The city equally counts a pottery factory, a theatre, two cinemas, and the Munda Wanga Environmental Park, with a zoo and botanical gardens. Three of the largest shopping malls in Zambia are in Lusaka, with the Manda Hill shopping mall hosting international stores like Shoprite and Game and Woolworths.

The city centre is home to several large markets. Lusaka is served by the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, which is used for both civil and military operations. Intracity transport is handled minibuses, although larger buses and shared taxis ply specific routes.

Lusaka counts among its infrastructure several sports facilities like the Nkholoma Stadium, Sunset Stadium, the Olympic Youth Development Centre and the Lusaka Golf Club. It equally boasts a 60000-seat stadium built by China.

Lusaka is something of an education hotspot, as evidenced by the presence of several universities and colleges in the city, from private to public institutions, as well as national and international. With all this taken into consideration, Lusaka offers several options to people who envisage studying in the city.
