Mansoura is located in Egypt, about 100 kilometres from Cairo. The city is named after the Egyptian victory at the El Mansoura Battle over the French during the Seventh Crusade. It was established in 1219 by the Ayyubid dynasty. Its history is closely linked to the defeat and capture of Louis IX of France, with the location where the captured king and his brother were kept being the only museum in Mansoura.

The climate of the city is a typical hot desert climate, experiencing an excess of evaporation over precipitation. Average temperatures vary between 14 and 27 degrees Celsius. The total population of the city is just over 960000. Mansoura’s population speaks a northern Egyptian Arabic dialect, noticeably influenced by the city’s surrounding rural villages, which have contributed to the city’s population over the years.

The lone museum in Mansoura is the Mansoura National Museum, that houses suits of mail and swords of crusaders, as well as a collection of maps. Huge paintings also depict the Battle of Mansoura during the Seventh Crusade. The city is famous for its architectural style – the Shinnawi Palace, in particular, is a striking landmark in that regard.

The mosque of El-Saleh Ayoub El-Kebir is also a popular site in Mansoura. It separates Old Mansoura from the modern city.

Mansoura is home to Mansoura University. It boasts a Urology and Nephrology centre considered to be the best kidney centre in Africa and the Middle East. It also has an Olympic Village that is open to the general public. Mansoura is home to Mansoura University; this acts as a prime attraction for students considering higher education in the city.
