Debre Markos is a town and woreda in northwest Ethiopia. It is located in the Misrak Gojjam Zone of the Amhara Administrative Region. The town bears its name from the first church of the town, constructed in 1869. In 1935, the town had postal, telegraph, and telephone service. The Italians arrived in 1936 with promises of freedom from oppressors, to the complete bemusement of the inhabitants. The Italian fortification that was eventually established in the town as part of Italian East Africa was subsequently captured by the British Gideon Force and Ethiopian Resistance Fighters in 1941 during the East African Campaign, and the town returned under control of the Ethiopians. It is one of 27 places in Ethiopia ranked as a First Class Township Debre Markos has a subtropical highland climate, with average temperatures varying between 18.9 degrees Celsius and 25.1 degrees Celsius. The total population of the town is an estimated 262000 people.

The city has three highways and one airport, Debre Markos Airport. Construction of Africa’s first electric bus manufacturing factory began on 43 hectares of land in Debre Markos 2007, with aims of employing 5000 people. The town is home the famous Markos Church, cradle of renowned national writers and the King’s burial place. The old crown of the ancient King and paintings revealing the Tekle Haymanot’s battle against the Sudanese Mahadists can also be found in the town. The great central monument marks the victory where 300 members of the combined Ethiopian-Allied army defeated more than 1,400 Italian troops in April 1941. The town is a highly attractive location for investment and study – with structures ranging from the construction sector to agro-industry and agro-processing, and the presence of Debre Markos University.
