Chuka University is a public university located in Tharaka Nithi County, Kenya. The university is the successor of the former Egerton University Eastern Campus College, Chuka, and it served as a constituent college of Egerton University. The Campus College was established in 2004 by Egerton University Council to enhance access to high quality and affordable University education. In 2007 it became Chuka University, the first higher education institution to be opened in the Eastern Province. It has main campus in Chuka that is separated into four campuses, and a Town Campus in Nairobi.

Chuka University is ranked in the top 50 universities in Kenya, according to Webometrics’ ranking of African universities. The establishment of Chuka University has led to the congregation of students and staff from all parts of the country from different cultures. Apart from specialty courses, students are taught core courses and participate in extra curricula activities that promote peacebuilding and reconciliation. The university was founded to generate, preserve and share knowledge for effective leadership in higher education, training, research and outreach through nurturing an intellectual culture that integrates theory with practice and innovation. The university enrols over 3000 students annually.

Chuka University offers a number of facilities and services to its university community in order to enhance a suitable academic environment. The department of student’s welfare is charged with the responsibility of offering services to cater for all the welfare of the students. Its activities include guidance and counselling, sports and recreation, recruitment and placement service, club and societies activities. The university provides accommodation to students who apply for it, and it also facilitates the search for good hostels off-campus. It also provides sporting facilities and programmes for competition, leisure and recreation – these include indoor and outdoor facilities. Counselling services are implemented through the use of professional students’ counsellors, chaplains, academic advisors and the peer counsellors. The staff in the medical department are also available to be consulted or to handle referral cases.

Tharaka-Nithi County is a county located in the former Eastern Province of Kenya. It is the home of the Chula, Muthamni, Mwimbi and Tharaka sections of the Ameru Community. The Meru District was broken up into four pieces in 1992, with Meru South being combined with Tharaka to form the Tharaka-Nithi District. A few years later it was split into two separate districts, but by 2009 it had been reformed into a county after the split was declared unconstitutional. The total population of the county is close to 400000. Average temperatures in Tharaka-Nithi country vary between 14 degrees Celsius to 24 degrees Celsius. The primary economic activities in the county are tea and coffee planting, subsistence dairy farming and livestock rearing, particularly goats and sheep.

Tharaka-Nithi is a haven of natural resources, with the presence of arable land, sand quarries, forests and wildlife. Touristic attractions like the Mutejwa National Reserve add value to the county. Tharaka-Nithi aims to be a competitive, dynamic, environmentally friendly county for quality education advancement and investment, economically stable and enrichment of innovation and creativity in all fields. It has many secondary schools, and it was the first in the eastern province to host a public university – Chuka University. The presence of this university could convince students to discover the county, in a bid to further their education.
