Chinhoyi is a town located in the Mashonaland West Province in Zimbabwe, precisely in the Makonde District. It is the capital of the aforementioned province and the headquarters of the district. Chinhoyi was called Sinoia during the colonial era, named after a local chief. The town was established in 1906 as a group of settlement schemes by the Italians. It acquired town status in 1946. The total population of the town as per a 2012 census is just over 63000. The climate is warm and temperate in Chinhoyi, and summers are much rainier than the winters. The average annual temperature in the town is 19.8 degrees celsius. Chinhoyi is the centre of a productive agricultural area, primarily tobacco, corn and cattle, as well as a mining district rich in copper and mica. Barclays Bank Zimbabwe maintains a branch in the town, along with Standard Chartered Zimbabwe.

The Chinhoyi Caves are a group of limestone and dolomite caves situated northwest of Chinhoyi. They’re a historical site that has been in existence for decades, attracting both domestic and international tourists who visit for a glimpse of the famous Chirorodziva  — commonly referred to as the “Sleeping Pool” or the “Light Pool.” Chinhoyi Caves are also believed to be sacred, and spirit mediums visit the place for ancestral worshipping or to hold cultural ceremonies. The area close to the caves was declared a National Monument as well as a National Park in 1957, according to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks). It later became a Recreational Park in 1975. Transport to and from Chinhoyi is mainly by road. Bus services connect Chinhoyi with Harare, Karoi, Kariba, Mhangura, Bulawayo, and smaller villages in the district.  There is a small airport for private planes, called Chinhoyi Airport. Chinhoyi is a college town, hosting two of the country’s major universities – Chinhoyi University of Technology and Zimbabwe Open University.
