Central University, also known as CU, is an accredited private university located in Accra, Greater Accra Region, Ghana. The university was officially established in the year 1992. The idea for Central University was born in the Pastoral training institute. This institute was started in October 1988, by the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC).

In June 1991, the institute experienced a name change to the Central Bible College. In 1993, the name was again changed to the Central Christian College. The College later upgraded its programmes to the baccalaureate level and expanded its programmes to include an integrated and practice-oriented business school, named Central Business School.

To that effect, the National Accreditation Board accredited the college as a tertiary Institution and it eventually got re-christened Central University College in 1998. In January 2016, the University College received the long-awaited Presidential Charter to become an autonomous and a fully-fledged university as Central University.

CU operates on four campuses namely; the Mataheko Campus, the Dansoman Campus, the Christ Temple Graduate School Campus and the Kumasi Campus.

Central University is well-known as the biggest private university in Ghana. Central University recently decided to increase its usage of solar energy and eventually switch to exclusive solar energy usage. This installed solar system is reckoned to produce over 401-kilowatt (KW) of electricity.

Central University is locally affiliated to the University of Cape Coast. In 2014, the University received the Socrates Award for the Best University & Best Manager of the year. Central University has a current enrolment of over 8,400 students, against 185 staff members.

Central University provides several academic and non-academic facilities for its students. These facilities include conference halls, an auditorium, Automated Teller Machines (ATM), free WIFI connection, restaurants, shopping malls, a library, a central student plaza, hostels & residential complexes, the International Central Gospel Church, a chaplaincy and a teaching hospital.

Some notable alumni of CU include Fianko Bossman a.k.a Chase (Popular Ghanaian musician), Jeffery Forson (Ghanaian model and actor), Yvonne Nelson (Ghanaian actress) and Nathan Kwabena Adisi (Broadcaster, Starr FM).

ABOUT THE CITY OF ACCRA
Accra is the capital and largest city of Ghana. The city lies on a cliff, 8 to 12 metres high, and spreads northward over the Accra plains. The name Accra comes from an Akan word “Nkran” that means ‘black ants in the vicinity‘. When the Portuguese first settled on the coast of what is now known as Ghana, in 1482, Accra was occupied by several villages of the Ga tribe. Between 1650 and 1680, the Europeans built three trading posts along the coast, known as Fort James (English), Fort Crevecoeur (Dutch), and Christiansburg Castle (Danish). After a tribal war, the major Ga towns on the Accra plains were displaced and drawn to the coast by the prospect of profitable trade with the Europeans. As a result, three coastal villages that are Osu (Christiansborg), Dutch Accra (later called Ussher Town), and James Town, sprang up, becoming the nuclei of what was to be Accra.
Accra then grew into a prosperous trading centre, and after the Danes and the Dutch left the region in 1850, Accra became the capital of the British Gold Coast colony. It served as the capital, and after independence, Accra became the country’s capital, acting as its administrative, economic, and educational centre.

Accra is influenced by the local steppe climate with an average temperature of 26.6 °C. The Ghanaian culture is characterised by a host of social gatherings – both colourful and musical. The celebration of festivals is an essential part of life, whether for child-birth, rites of passage, puberty, marriage or death. Accra’s economy revolves around the industrial, financial and service sectors. It is equally a bastion of tertiary education, boasting some of the best universities in Ghana like; the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, the University of Professional Studies, Accra, Ashesi University, Wisconsin International University College, Ghana, the Central University and the Pentecost University College, one reason why the city has become a popular study abroad destination.

Accra is one of Ghana most historic neighbourhoods where history resides on every street corner. It is best known for the Independence Square which contains monuments of Ghana’s independence struggle, including the Independence Arch, the Black Star Gate, and the Liberation Day Monument. Another visible historical landmark is the Jamestown Lighthouse that was constructed in 1875 by the British. The city encourages relaxation through the presence of numerous parks like the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum & Memorial park (final resting place of Ghana’s first president and it contains photos, artefacts and an insight into Dr Nkrumah’s life), the Labadi beach and the Osu Castle. It promotes cultural exploration through the W.E.B Dubois Memorial Centre, the Artist Alliance Gallery and the National Theatre.

Ghana is a country with a deep sports heritage and Accra being its capital upholds that heritage through the Accra Sports stadium, a 39,800 all-seater and multipurpose stadium. The Makola Market is a renowned market place and shopping district in the city, where a wide array of products are sold. Accra encourages movement within and out of the city through its airports, namely the Kotoka International Airport and the Accra International Airport. The city possesses a raft of health centres that cater to the health needs of the population. Provisions for worship are put in place through numerous worship houses like the Cathedral Church of the Most Holy Trinity and the Accra Central Mosque.
