The Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) is a public university in the town of Bindura, Zimbabwe. The university can be traced back to the Zimbabwe-Cubba Teacher Training Programme that started in the mid-1980s, a programme that sent student teachers to Cuba for training in Science Education.

The Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) is a public university in the town of Bindura, Zimbabwe. The university can be traced back to the Zimbabwe-Cubba Teacher Training Programme that started in the mid-1980s, a programme that sent student teachers to Cuba for training in Science Education.

When the programme was scrapped in 1995, a decision was made to set up a college in Bindura under the auspices of the University of Zimbabwe, but which would be turned into a full-fledged university within a period of two to four years. It started out as the Bindura University College of Science Education in 1996, and by 2000 it had been granted university status, becoming the fourth state university established in Zimbabwe under the name Bindura University of Science Education.

The university operates from the Public Service Training Centre while awaiting completion of its Main Campus along the Bindura – Mount Darwin Road. The Bindura University of Science Education is ranked 5th in Zimbabwe according to Webometrics’ ranking.

Sometimes lauded as the best university in terms of education in Zimbabwe, the university is the home of the first-ever Zimbabwean School of Optometry, opened in 2018. BUSE won the ZNCC (Zimbabwe Chamber of Commerce) award for the best tertiary institution in 2015, and its Vice-Chancellor won the National Public sector leadership Excellence award for 2015.

More so, BUSE  scooped a US$350.000 Research Grant for Capacity Building in Agriculture Community Action. In May 2019, a team of a scientist from BUSE were awarded a Microsoft AZURE research grant worth US$30.000. In the BOOST/ENACTUS National competitions in July 2019, BUSE team came out first. The university counts over 5000 students.

The Bindura University of Science Education runs several facilities and services that enhance a suitable academic environment for its university community. The university has 2 halls of residence that accommodate over 400 students. The Student Affairs department through the accommodation office is responsible for the allocation of accommodation to students in conformity with the university priority list.

Halls of residence are managed by a Full-Time Warden. Bindura University Clinic strives to provide holistic, individualised and affordable health care services to Bindura University of Science Education community through active participation of students and staff in their own health care – services available include health assessments, treatment of chronic and other illnesses, immunisation against Tetanus and reproductive health services.

The university boasts a state-of-the-art high-quality Gymnasium, complete with equipment and gym staff. Sport at Bindura University is viewed as a cornerstone to the overall development of a student. Some notable alumni are: Munyaradzi Shumba – Researcher, and Victor K Muposhi – a Dean at Chinhoyi University of Technology.

All confirmation requests from individuals and LOCAL organizations (eg ZIMSEC, local Universities and Colleges) domiciled in Zimbabwe attract a service fee of RTGS $100 per each request.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
For Undergraduate Degree Programmes
For normal entry, a student must have 5 Ordinary Level passes including Mathematics and English Language or the use of English Language examination or approved equivalent, and 2 Advanced Level subject passes or their equivalent.
Mature entry will be considered for candidates who are at least 25 years of age and have proven relevant work experience.
Special entry will be accorded to candidates with relevant diplomas and work experience.

– Ordinary Level of the Associated Examining Board’s General Certificate of Education.
– Credit Standard of the Cambridge Overseas Higher School Certificate.
– Ordinary Level of the University of London’s General Certificate of Education
– Subsidiary Standard of the Cambridge Overseas Higher School Certificate.
– Ordinary Level of the Zimbabwe Schools Examinations Council.
*Advanced Level equivalents:
– Advanced Level of the Associated Examining Board’s General Certificate of Education.
– Principal Subject Standard of Cambridge Overseas Higher School Certificate.
– Advanced Level of the University of London’s General Certificate of Education.
– Advanced Level of the Zimbabwe Schools Examinations Council

*For admission to a particular programme of study and/or for subjects/Courses within the programmes there may be specific restrictions on the choice of subjects in the General Requirements and/or additional requirements concerning entry. Such additional requirements shall be prescribed in the faculty regulations.

For Postgraduate Degree Programmes
Masters Degrees by coursework
The normal entry requirements is an appropriate degree, professional qualification and experience or approved equivalent qualification. Other qualifications may be considered by the Senate on the recommendations of the departments and faculties concerned.

MPhil and DPhil degrees
These degree programmes are carried out primarily through supervised research work but may include an element of coursework not exceeding 25% of the total programme.
*Studies may be pursued on a full time or part-time basis. There is no closing date as students do not follow academic terms.

Payment of application fees can be done at the University Cash Office or through any CBZ Bank
Complete the application form in full and indicate on top of the application form the intake you prefer (March or August) and the mode of study (Block or Full Time).
Post or hand-deliver your completed application form to; Assistant Registrar – Admissions, Registration & Student Records, Bindura University of Science Education Bag, 1020 Bindura.
Attach certified copies of educational qualifications, I.D, Birth Certificate and proof of payment of the requisite application fees. Applications without these documents will not be processed.
Successful candidates will be notified through their contact numbers and national press.

Bindura was originally named Kimberley Reef, after the gold mine which was opened in 1901, and changed to Bindura in 1913 when the railway arrived.

The town has a population of over 125000. It enjoys a savanna climate characterised by hot and humid summers, and cold to mild winters. Temperatures vary between 18 and 30 degrees celsius.

Bindura is surrounded by rich Nickel and Gold mining operations and a well developed agricultural farming. Cotton and maize are grown intensely in the region. It has excellent communication systems with links to all major cities by road, rail and telephone. The perennial Mazowe River runs around Bindura and through the north-eastern perimeter.

Bindura is the seat of the Bindura University of Science Education, one of the top institutions of tertiary education in Zimbabwe.
