The American University of Nigeria (AUN) is a private institution located in Yola, Adamawa State, Nigeria. It was established in 2003 by Nigeria’s former Vice President H.E., Atiku Abubakar along with other local and international statesmen and academic leaders.

Historically, the university was called ABTI University of Nigeria, before it was changed to a private university and called the American University of Nigeria in 2004. AUN was created in response to the demand for high-quality, American-style higher education in West Africa.

The university was thus created in partnership with the American University in Washington, D.C., an institution with an international reputation for excellence. AUN aims at offering an education that is in every way the equal of what a student would experience at the better universities in the United States.

The American University of Nigeria provides a broad liberal arts education and also meets the professional aspirations of students and the demand by local and international employers for highly trained staff.

In November 2015, Two students from AUN won fresh laurels at the Business Plan Competition, organized by the Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Innovation Foundation. In 2016, AUN won a partnership at the seventh annual Hult Prize Challenge in Dubai.

In 2017, AUN won the first Africa Regional Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Challenging Extremism Competition with their Women Against Violent Extremism (WAVE) campaign in Ghana. AUN Academy won the Northeast School of the Year Award in 2018. It counts over 1400 students and 1000 staff.

The American University of Nigeria provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including digital services like a library, an E-learning Center which facilitates students to conduct research, study and work in groups.

It also provides 8 luxurious hostels and halls of residence for its students four halls for females and four for males. A health centre that cater for the health needs of the staff and students.

Cafeteria and other facilities provide the campus community with healthy, sustainable meals, not Leaving out sports facilities and other administrative services.

AUN has graduated some notable alumni like Shalom Otuene – Administrative Officer, Bobai Balat – a Nigerian disc jockey, Sarem Ugoh – Researcher, Hamman Samuel – Researcher, Donatien Ishimwe – Petroleum Exploration Geophysicist at RMB, Emily Nkanga – a Nigerian-British photographer.

For Undergraduates
• Students must possess a minimum Jamb score of 160 or JAMB’s yearly official cut off score to be considered for admission at AUN
• Candidates must have a pass in five (5) credits, including English Language and Mathematics, on no more than two SSCE sittings, or an equivalent from a country that requires other types of exit exams or standardized tests.
** Applicants for Engineering and Technology disciplines should be passed at credit level in the Senior Secondary School final year examination or GCE ‘O’ Level in five subjects including Mathematics, English Language, Physics and Chemistry.
** Applicants for Bachelor of Laws (LLB Honors) program must, in addition, possess credit in Literature-in-English.

For O Levels
• Completed Application form
• SSCE, any or combination of (WAEC/NECO/GCE/IGCSE/NABTEB)
• Transcripts from high school (SS1-3)
• Letter of Recommendation (from your high school principal)
• JAMB result (A minimum score of 160)
• ID card (International passport/Drivers’ license/National ID card).
• A personal essay on why you are choosing AUN and what your future ambitions are.

For Direct Entry
• Completed Application form
• Diploma result (NCE/OND/HND) or ‘A’Level
• Official Transcripts
• SSCE, any or combination of (WAEC/NECO/GCE/IGCSE/NABTEB)
• Direct entry JAMB or IJMB
• Recommendation letter

For international students
• End of High/Secondary School External Examination Grades; IGCSE, SSCE or the equivalent.
• Copies of applicant’s High/Secondary School transcripts for the last three years. Transfer applicants need to submit undergraduate transcripts and course description.
• A Letter of Recommendation/Attestation from the high/secondary school attended.
• A Personal Statement (Essay) about why the applicant chose AUN and what his/her future ambitions are.
• A photocopy of ID card, Valid Passport & appropriate Visa for International students (picture page).
• Four personal Passport Photographs.

For Postgraduates
• Applicant must be a graduate of a recognized university with an average grade point average (CGPA) of not less than 3.0 on a 5.0 maximum CGPA (or Second Class Lower Division).
• An applicant is expected to have a minimum of one year of work experience, preferably at the mid-level or senior management level.
• Applicants must submit the following materials to the Graduate Admissions Office:

  • A completed application form – (Download the Application Form)
  • Graduation certificate with verifiable grades and required grade point average
  • Official transcript from each university attended
  • Copies of all certificates of each university attended
  • Two (2) Letters of Recommendation
  • Evidence of payment of application fee

Modibbo Adama was recognised as a learned Muslim who could lead the people in the Upper Benue area during the Islamic movement led by Shehu Usman Dan Fodio of the 19th Century. It formerly served as the capital of a Fulani state until it was taken over by the British in 1901.

After Nigeria’s independence, Yola got designated the capital of Adamawa State, which was formed in 1991. Yola city features a tropical climate with an average annual temperature is 28.0 °C.

The Yola people have unique customs that originate in the old Duchy of Normandy. These included mumming, patrons, and the tradition of placing funeral crosses on roadway trees, which continues till this day. Yola’s economy is highly dependent on agriculture and trade.

Yola has an extensive road network, and it serves as a major transport hub between different cities. The primary transportation means in the city include buses and taxis.

Yola also maintains an airport that services flights within and out of the city. The city’s landscape and wildlife, encourage exploration and investigation.

Some key attraction sites in the city include the Lamurde Hot Spring (designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999 and one of the top tourist destinations in Nigeria), the Kiri Dam (Originally built to meet the electricity & water needs of city and boat fishing, racing and surfing) and the Three Sister Rocks.

The city has different accommodation options that include high-end resorts to homely alcoves and flea-ridden beddings. The city maintains several restaurants, shops and street stalls that offer dishes and services with a broad range of options that cater to middle-class indigenes, students and tourists.

Yola is home to numerous public and private institutions of learning from the primary, secondary to the tertiary level and to several private and public institutions of learning namely; the Adamawa State Polytechnic, the American University of Nigeria, Modibbo Adama University of Technology Yola (MAUTECH) and the Federal Government Girls College, Yola among others.

Giving a thoughtful appraisal of the above facilities may prompt a desire to study in MAUTECH.
