Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, also known as FUNAI, is an accredited federal university located in Ndufu Alike Ikwo, Ebonyi State, southeastern Nigeria. The university was officially established in the year 2011. In a bid to promote higher education in the country, the Nigerian government decided to establish more Federal Government universities in the country. Since Ebonyi State was officially recognised as an educationally disadvantaged region and void of any Federal university, the government decided to establish the Alex Ekwueme Federal University in 2011.

Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, is among the youngest universities in Nigeria. The university’s registrar was given an award for an excellent service to humanity. FUNAI’s students of the Psychology Department emerged best at the 2019 Nigerian Psychological Association Quiz Competition hosted at the University of Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State, south-southern Nigeria. FUNAI also emerged second at the maiden edition of DUMTIGA Games, bagging 13 gold, 8 silver and 10 bronze medals. During the 2018 National Technology and Innovation Exposition held at the Eagles Square, FUNAI emerged third among all tertiary institutions in Nigeria. FUNAI has a total student population of over 9,000 students.

Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, possesses several academic and non-academic facilities that foster its students’ academic and social life. These facilities include an auditorium, lecture halls, a million-volume library, a computing & service desk, water boreholes & tanks, generators, internet services, wastes (solid and liquid) disposal services and a sports village.

Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike accepts applications from local and international students for its Bachelors, Masters and PhD level programmes.

Bachelor’s Programmes: The two main ways to get admission into FUNAI are either through “JAMB UTME Exam” or “Direct Entry”.
  Admission Requirements for Direct Entry Candidates:
➤ Candidates should have one of the following qualifications; Cambridge A’Level, GCE A’Level, HND, ND, NCE, IJMB, JUPEB.
➤ You will need to be at least 16 years of age.
➤ Possess five O’Level credit passes (WAEC/WASSCE, NECO, GCE or NABTEB) including English language and Mathematics. It must be in not more than two sittings.
➤ Direct entry candidates do not need to write JAMB UTME. They just need to acquire and fill the JAMB Direct Entry Form.
*After a satisfactory admission screening or entrance test/interview, you will be directly admitted to the 200 Level (second year) course of your choice.
  Admission Requirements for JAMB UTME Candidates:
➨ Candidates seeking admission into 100 Level (first year) are required to write the JAMB UTME exam and score at least 180.
*Those who chose FUNAI as their first choice and scored 180 & above in the JAMB UTME will then write FUNAI’s Post UTME exam.
*Successful candidates will be given admission after consideration of their score at both the JAMB UTME and FUNAI’s Post UTME exam.
➨ You will need to be at least 16 years of age.
➨ Possess five O’Level credit passes (WAEC/WASSCE, NECO, GCE or NABTEB) in 3 relevant subjects plus English language and Mathematics. It must be in not more than two sittings.
➨ Candidates must choose the correct JAMB subject combination for their desired bachelor’s degree programme/course.
➨ Candidates must also meet the stipulated Post UTME cut-off mark for their desired/chosen bachelor’s programme.

Master’s Programmes: To qualify for Master’s Degree Programmes, candidates must:
■ Possess a Bachelor’s degree in relevant disciplines from FUNAI or any other university recognised by the senate.
■ Possess relevant Postgraduate Diplomas with a minimum CGPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale or 3.0 on a 4-point scale.

PhD Programmes: To qualify for PhD Programmes, candidates must:
■ Possess a Master’s degree with a CGPA of 4.0 on a 5-point scale or 3.2 on a 4-point scale.

HOW TO APPLY
Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike has set up an online portal to assist candidates seeking enrolment into its institution. Hence, the applicant should visit the website: https://www.funai.edu.ng/ admission/ to create an account, choose a course and follow all other relevant steps on the application process.  FUNAI’s cut off mark for both the JAMB and UTME Score is 180. The application period into the Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike generally runs during the months of July and August.

Ebonyi State is one of Nigeria’s 36 states found in the south-eastern region of the country. Abakaliki is the state’s capital and largest city with a total population of over 555,267 inhabitants. Ebonyi State is one of Nigeria’s six new states created in 1996 by the then president: General Sanni Abacha’s administration. Ebonyi State was carved out of the old Abakaliki division of Enugu State and the old Afikpo division of Abia State. Ebonyi State features a tropical climate with an average temperature of 27.6oC. The Igbos dominate the state with other minority ethnic groups from neighbouring states. Ebonyi has a very rich cultural heritage, manifested in dressing, music, dance, festivals, arts and crafts, and the traditional hospitality of the people. Ebonyi state’s economy depends mainly on agriculture.

Ebonyi State is guided by the Ebonyi Transport Policy whose infrastructure strategy is to construct new roads and rehabilitate existing ones triennially. The state also launched a ring road project to elongate the state’s road span further. Ebonyi allows movement within and out of the state through its airport dubbed; the Akanu Ibiam International Airport. Ebonyi State has numerous touristic attractions and relaxation resorts that welcome both visitors and inhabitants. Some of these attractions include the Abakaliki Green Lake, an amusement Park, Amanchor caves and the Golden Sand Beaches. The state hosts several hotels and accommodation houses of varying status and prizes. It equally houses other popular education centres and universities, such as the Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu, the Ebonyi State University and the Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic. Ebonyi possesses several sports centres and amenities such as the Abakaliki Golf Course and the Abakaliki Township Stadium Abba. It maintains several hospitals, clinics and some teaching hospitals. These medical services are out to cater to the needs of the ill population. Carefully assessing the facilities above may serve as important deciding factors in studying at FUNAI.
