Ahmadu Bello University, also known as ABU, is a federal university located in Zaria, Kaduna State, north-western Nigeria.
As the prospects for Nigeria’s independence grew, the need for a second university, after the University of Ibadan (1948), grew bigger. A report by the Ashby Commission recommending an increase in universities in Nigeria was submitted. Following the recommendations proposed by the Ashby Commission report, it was decided that a University of Northern Nigeria at Zaria will be created. To that effect, the law establishing the new university was passed by the Northern Region legislature in 1961 and Ahmadu Bello University was created.  The university operates on two campuses, namely the Samaru campus (main campus) and the Kongo campus.

Ahmadu Bello University is well-known as the second oldest university in Nigeria. ABU is also considered the largest (in size) and the most extensive of universities in Sub-Saharan Africa and the second-largest university on the African continent after the University of Cairo in Egypt. ABU is currently ranked as the 6th best university in Nigeria according to Webometrics. During the 2019 edition of the Huawei ICT Competition, ABU won the Best Academy award, their two instructors won the Best Instructors award and the university emerged third in the skills competition global final in China. ABU has a total student population of over 50,000. The university also has 1,400 academic & research staff and over 5,000 support staff.

Ahmadu Bello University provides several academic and non-academic facilities for its students. These facilities include lecture halls, a teaching hospital, a pharmacy, parks, gardens, The ABU Energy/Bulking Metering Unit (responsible for the distribution of power across the Institution), free WIFI service, a library, campus accommodation and a sports center (including a swimming pool).
Some notable alumni of ABU include Sanusi Lamido Sanusi (Ex-Emir of Kano and Ex-Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria), Musa Yar’Adua (Former President of Nigeria), Atiku Abubakar (Former Vice President of Nigeria) Yahaya Bello (Governor of Kogi State), Namadi Sambo (Former Vice President of Nigeria), Mansur Mukhtar (former executive director of the World Bank) and Dino Melaye (Ex-Senator for Kogi West).

Ahmadu Bello University accepts applications from local and international students for its Diploma, Bachelors, Master’s and PhD level programmes.

Diploma Programmes: To qualify for Diploma Programmes, candidates must:
■ Possess one of the following certificates; WAEC, NECO, SSCE or S.I.S.C.E.
■ Possess five O’Level credit passes (WAEC/WASSCE, NECO, GCE or NABTEB) including English language and Mathematics. It must be in not more than two sittings.

Bachelor’s Programmes: The two main ways to get admission into ABU are either through “JAMB UTME Exam” or “Direct Entry”.

  Admission Requirements for Direct Entry Candidates:
➤ Candidates should have one of the following qualifications; Cambridge A’Level, GCE A’Level, HND, ND, NCE, IJMB, JUPEB.
➤ You will need to be at least 16 years of age.
➤ Possess five O’Level credit passes (WAEC/WASSCE, NECO, GCE or NABTEB) including English language and Mathematics. It must be in not more than two sittings.
➤ Direct entry candidates do not need to write JAMB UTME. They just need to acquire and fill the JAMB Direct Entry Form.
*After a satisfactory admission screening or entrance test/interview, you will be directly admitted to the 200 Level (second year) course of your choice.

  Admission Requirements for JAMB UTME Candidates:
➨ Candidates seeking admission into 100 Level (first year) are required to write the JAMB UTME exam and score at least 180.
*Those who chose ABU as their first choice and scored 180 & above in the JAMB UTME will then write ABU’s Post UTME exam.
*Successful candidates will be given admission after consideration of their score at both the JAMB UTME and ABU’s Post UTME exam.
➨ You will need to be at least 16 years of age.
➨ Possess five O’Level credit passes (WAEC/WASSCE, NECO, GCE or NABTEB) in 3 relevant subjects plus English language and Mathematics. It must be in not more than two sittings.
➨ Candidates must choose the correct JAMB subject combination for their desired bachelor’s degree programme/course.
➨ Candidates must also meet the stipulated Post UTME cut-off mark for their desired/chosen bachelor’s programme.

Master’s Programmes: To qualify for Master’s Degree Programmes, candidates must:
■ Possess a Bachelor’s degree in any field with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.40 from Ahmadu Bello University or any other recognized University.
■ Possess a Postgraduate Diploma from Ahmadu Bello University or any other recognized University.

PhD Programmes: To qualify for PhD Programmes, candidates must:
■ Possess a Master degree with a CGPA of 4.00 in coursework and 60% or B grade in thesis performance.

HOW TO APPLY
Ahmadu Bello University has set up an online portal to assist candidates seeking enrolment into its institution. Hence, the applicant should visit the website: https://portal.abu.edu.ng/ to create an account, get a matric number, choose a course and follow all other relevant steps on the application process.  Ahmadu Bello University doesn’t have general Post UTME and JAMB cut-off marks, their cut-off marks are considered at the departmental level. The application period into ABU generally runs during the months of July & August.

The city has a tropical climate, characterised by heavy rainfall and an average temperature of 25.2 oC. Kaduna State is a multicultural and multi-ethnic state populated by about 59 to 63 different ethnic groups. The Kaduna State economy was the 15th largest state economy in Nigeria from 2002 to 2008, and Zaria’s economy is primarily based on agriculture.
